Pierce Brosnan hints that Mamma Mia 3 would finally answer this long-standing mystery about Sophie

Pierce Brosnan reveals that a long-standing mystery about the Mamma Mia franchise might be resolved in Mamma Mia 3. This marks the third chapter of this film series that began in 2008. It introduced us to Sophie and Donna's idyllic lives on an island on the day of Sophie's wedding.

Brosnan played one of one of Donna's former lovers, who gets invited to the ceremony along with two other men from Donna's past. The goal was to know Sophie's father. However, the film did not reveal the truth and the 2018 sequel didn'toffer any answers either.

For the same reason, in a recent interview, The Hollywood Reporter asked Brosnan: Will Mamma Mia 3 reveal who Sophie's biological father is? Here's what the actor said,

"I think you’ll have to wait for the next movie. I think leave that one right there. I know who it is, but I don’t want to be a killjoy."

Mamma Mia 3 might put an end to the discussions and debates about Sophie's biological dad.

The first Mamma Mia film allowed us to enter Sophie's peaceful world and to meet her mother's past lovers: Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth), and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård). They all shared stories about their history with Donna and what brought them together as lovers. Toward the end, the three decided to share the responsibility of being Sophie's father, while Sam also proposed to Donna, and they got together for good.

The sequel explored Donna's past and gave us a few more pieces into her life, but it did not reveal who Sophie's father is either. So, the mystery remains unresolved up until the discussions about Mamma Mia 3, and Pierce Brosnan's recent comments reveal that it might just explain who the father is. He says he knows the answer but does not want to spoil it for the audience and ruin the fun for them. However, considering past theories, many people believe Brosnan's Sam to be Sophie's father.

There are also some other theories related to Harry and Bill, especially for the latter, whose hair and eye color make people suspect that he is Sophie's father. Mamma Mia 3 will likely put an end to these discussions. However, for the same reason, some fans believe that this mystery should not be resolved at all since it is a big part of why they love this film series.

Amanda Seyfried also reveals who she thinks is Sophie's father.

During a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Amanda Seyfried shared who she hopes Sophie's father is. That is tied to the moment when her three potential fathers realize why they are on the island. Seyfriend shares why Stellan Skarsgård'sreaction (as Bill) resonated with her.

"It's one of the purest moments in the movie because there's a lot of pride in Stellan, but also a lot of shock and fear. Just full acceptance in a small amount of time. It's a full-circle moment. It's beautiful. Comedically he's also very skilled, and because of this moment I always secretly hoped it was Stellan who was really her father. I'm sorry, Bill."

Seyfried further added,

"He was the person who seemed the least likely to want to have kids. From realization to acceptance, there is a scene that cuts to a song called 'Name of the Game,' and we sing it together, and I'm begging him, 'What's the name of the game?' We had a lot of fun. We got really tight."

Hopefully, Mamma Mia 3 will resolve the mystery for the fans.
