More details about Play Dirty
Co-written and directed by Shane Black, the film reimagines Donald E. Westlake’s legendary Parker novels, written under the pen name Richard Stark. At its core is Mark Wahlberg as Parker, a career thief who plays by his own brutal code, matched by LaKeith Stanfield’s Grofield, a character as slippery as he is magnetic.
Premiering October 1, 2025, on Prime Video via Amazon MGM Studios, the story pits Parker against impossible odds: a South American dictator with iron-fisted power, the ever-dangerous New York mob, and the richest man alive, who is determined to stay on top at any cost. It’s a globe-trotting setup that promises not just slick action but razor-edged humor and tension that only Shane Black can deliver. This is Black's first film in the last seven years, having worked on The Predator in 2018 and then going off on a break.
The film’s path to the screen has been its own caper. First announced in 2022, the project originally cast Robert Downey Jr. before Mark Wahlberg ultimately took the lead. Behind the scenes, Susan Downey and Marc Toberoff are producing, with Ezra Emanuel as co-producer. Producer Joel Silver was attached early on but was later replaced by Jules Daly in 2023.
Cameras rolled in March 2024 across Sydney Harbour, Ku-ring-gai Council, and the Hills District, transforming Australian backdrops into the film’s seedy playgrounds of crime and power. By early 2025, another big name joined the team: legendary composer Alan Silvestri, tasked with scoring the film’s pulse. With its pedigree, cast, and electric premise, Play Dirty is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated crime thrillers of the year.
Replacing the earlier January release date, Amazon MGM is rolling Play Dirty out on Prime Video on October 1, 2025.
