Ponyboi: Release date news, cast details and more about the upcoming thriller movie by River Gallo and starring Victoria Pedretti

You star Victoria Pedretti is making her big screen return in the much-anticipated upcoming thriller film Ponyboi. The movie is gearing up for a premiere this week (on Friday) with Fox Entertainment Studios holding distribution rights in the United States.

River Gallo, who did the screenplay in Ponyboi, will also be featured alongside Teen Wolf star Dylan O'Brien, with Esteban Arango helming the project. Adapted from the 2019 short film (going by the same name), the story centers on an intersex sex worker whose life is turned upside down owing to a drug deal gone awry. The official synopsis of Ponyboi, per IMDb, reads:

"Unfolding over the course of Valentine's Day in New Jersey, a young intersex sex worker must run from the mob after a drug deal goes sideways, forcing him to confront his past."

When will Ponyboi be released?

Ponyboi will hit theatres across the United States this Friday, i.e., June 27, 2025. Early screenings of the movie happened last year in January at the Sundance Film Festival, and currently it holds an 83% score on RT with a number of positive reviews from critics. Filming reportedly took place in 2022, mostly across various locations in New Jersey.

What do we know about the story of Ponyboi?

According to Deadline, the upcoming thriller Ponyboi revolves around the life of an intersex lead named Ponyboi, portrayed by River Gallo, and all the events of the movie span over one day.

This is also a major milestone in movie-making as it is the first time an intersex narrative will be featured by an intersex filmmaker, and social media has also been seeing quite the buzz owing to a star-studded cast.

Ponyboi is a sex worker living in New Jersey, and the story unravels as the city gets all decked up on the occasion of Valentine's Day. Ponyboi's sole companion is his best friend, a woman named Angel (Victoria Pedretti), and the two of them are seen busy at a local laundromat.

But Ponyboi's life is not that simple because of his pimp as well as secret lover Vinnie (Dylan O'Brien plays the role) who has an abusive nature, per Deadline. With life already throwing so many restrictions at our protagonist, he seeks a break from all of it and gets involved in a drug deal that totally goes sideways.

As per Deadline, with mobsters tailing him, Ponyboi flees the scene to save himself, and amidst all the conundrums, surprisingly gets help from a mystery man named Bruce (played by Murray Bartlett). The story is a drama thriller that uses emotional turmoil as a major driving force while also featuring the LGBTQ+ community.

Award-winning filmmaker cum screenwriter River Gallo will lead the cast of Ponyboi playing the titular character. Maze Runner star Dylan O' Brien will also be joining the team in the role of a guy named Vinnie alongside Victoria Predetti (from The Haunting of Hill House), who will portray the part of Angel.
