Jimmy Kimmel's suspension from ABC has sparked a wave of reactions from other late-night show hosts, political figures, and viewers across the U.S. The ‘indefinite’ suspension came after Kimmel’s comments about the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk were met with backlash. ABC ultimately decided to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Jimmy Fallon, host of The Tonight Show, addressed the matter during his Thursday night monologue. Fallon joked at first that his own father confused him with Kimmel. He then described Kimmel as "a decent, funny, and loving guy" and added, "I hope he comes back."
Fallon also mentioned that his own show would continue to cover political news as usual. Netizens reacted to Jimmy Fallon's statement, saying:
"Depressing stuff, Jimmy probably knows he may be next."
Internet reactions to Jimmy Fallon's response to Jimmy Kimmel's ABC suspension
Pop Base took to their official X (formerly Twitter) page to post that,
"Jimmy Fallon reacts to Jimmy Kimmel's show being pulled off the air."
X users were quick to jump into the post's comment section as they shared their opinions. Below are some of their remarks:
"jimmy fallon's face when he realizes his whole career has been a desperate attempt to be liked by jimmy kimmel", noted a netizen.
"Fallon handled that Kimmel situation really well. He kept it light with jokes so the audience could laugh, but you could also tell he was genuinely standing up for Kimmel as a friend and a fellow host. Calling him a "decent, funny, and loving guy" was a solid reminder that behind all the headlines, Kimmel's still just a human being doing his job. It's crazy seeing late night turn into a conversation about censorship and free speech, but Fallon showing solidarity like that means a lot.", opined another.
"Conan is the only funny one anyways but yea I agree everyone should be allowed to say what they want. Censorship is pushed by both parties when they get hurt and that isn't the wave", stated a third.
Others also chimed in:
"yes!!! they should come together and support each other", commented an X user.
"Watch how every talk show host is coming in support of Jimmy Kimmel… he really was loved bring back his show", shared another.
"I feel like this is a pretty weak response. Now is the time to STAND UP FOR FREE SPEECH and STAND AGAINST GOVERNMENT CENSORSHIP in a big way. I understand the impulse to be comedic, obviously. I just wish you would met the moment here because you definitely didn't.", penned a third.
During his Monday monologue, Kimmel addressed the assassination of Charlie Kirk. He criticized what he called attempts by "the MAGA gang" to politicize the tragedy. These remarks drew criticism.
FCC chair Brendan Carr escalated the situation by stating that ABC and its parent company Disney risked regulatory consequences if they continued to air the show. Following the suspension, President Trump shared the news on social media and said it was "Great News for America."
