Punch Drunk Love revolves around Barry Egan, who runs a company that manufactures several items, including toilet plungers. He is a bachelor and suffers from social anxiety and loneliness. Barry falls in love with Lena Leonard, who is the friend and co-worker of his sister Elizabeth Egan (Mary Lynn Rajskub).

Towards the end, Barry decides to follow Lena, who is heading to Hawaii for work. He uses his sister, who then helps him get in touch with Lena. The two start seeing each other, and romance slowly blossoms between them.

While Lena is returning, her car is rammed into by the four brothers, which leads to her sustaining injuries. The two people were sent by the phone line owner. Barry was using the line to cope with his sense of loneliness. The owner was trying to extort money from him. Barry decides to fight them off and takes Lena to the hospital.

At that moment, he decides to end this streak of harassment. Barry finds out that the phone line is supervised by a mattress shop owner named Dean, who lives in Provo, Utah. Barry confronts him, and the latter feels threatened. Later on, Barry meets Lena and apologizes to her for the accident. Lena eventually forgives him, and the two start a new journey together.

As the curtains for Punch Drunk Love are about to drop, we see Lena and Barry ending up together. Barry explains everything to Lena and promises to accompany her on all her future business trips. While Lena was hurt that he had left her at the hospital, she forgave him after finding out why he had left. The two hug and embrace each other in the last frame.

In most of the film, Barry remains reclusive and longs for a partner. But because of his introverted nature, he has not been able to find anyone. However, things change for him after he meets Lena. Just like most Adam Sandler films, Punch Drunk Love also has a happy ending.

In a Phase9 interview, director Paul Thomas Anderson revealed that he was inspired to make a film after reading a Times Magazine article.

"You get into a situation, you have a bunch of ideas floating around, and you want to make a movie. So what do you need? With this it was a story I read in Time magazine about a guy who finds a loophole in a frequent-flyer promotion. It was just a piece of inspiration really. It’s nice to wave that story around too and say it’s true, it really did happen."
