James Bond is more than just a part of pop culture; he is a cultural phenomenon in his own right. Several films and books later, people remain interested in knowing when the next Bond film will be released and who will portray the 007 agent in it.
A wild theory has recently been circulating in the digital space, suggesting that Skyfall is somehow connected to Pierce Brosnan's film Die Another Day. Although these films belong to different eras and feature different actors portraying James Bond, this theory intriguingly links the two. Let’s take a closer look.
Theory suggests that James Bond in Skyfall is connected to Die Another Day
The James Bond franchise has slowly evolved and undergone several changes. Amid changing times, fan theories often pop up occasionally. One of these theories connects Daniel Craig's "Skyfall" to the era of Pierce Brosnan's Bond films.
One Reddit theory suggests that Raoul Silva (the villain of Skyfall, played by Javier Bardem) was James Bond. This theory holds once you look at the chain of events. Brosnan's Bond became a rogue agent after going through torture in North Korea. M was compelled to hand him over to China because he posed a threat to the MI6 organization. This was arranged in exchange for the Chinese authorities releasing prisoners in return. Bond felt abandoned by his organization and experienced isolation. In his anger, he took on his original name of Raoul Silva (after being stripped of his code name).
Unable to endure the torment, Raoul consumes cyanide to take his life. Surprisingly, he survives, but it alters his appearance. This detail in the theory highlights the physical distinction between Brosnan and Bardem.
As Raoul undergoes various drastic life changes, M recruits a new 007 agent portrayed by Daniel Craig, leading to the events of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Eventually, Raoul escapes, harboring a deep-seated rage towards M. He succeeds in killing her, marking the completion Brosnan'sn's terrifying transformation into the antagonist.
If this theory is true, it bridges the time gap between Brosnan's and Craig's Bonds. Judi Dench remains M in both of these eras and acts as the glue that holds them together. The theory also manages to connect the entire franchise with a single thread. However, upon closer examination, we realize that it's just a theory, as Silva was an expert in cyberterrorism at MI6 and lived in Hong Kong. Unlike Bond, he was not an agent active in the field; therefore, the likelihood of him possessing similar skills is dubious.
Skyfall was the 23rd film in the James Bond franchise, directed by Sam Mendes. Craig starred as Agent 007 for the third consecutive time. The film was written by John Logan, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade. It was released on November 9, 2012, by Sony Pictures and ultimately grossed over a billion dollars at the box office.
