Netflix dropped a lot of content in the spring of 2026, but there's one that stood out for many; we're talking about Remarkably Bright Creatures. The film adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt's beloved debut novel, arrived on the platform on May 8, 2026, and it brought a cst full of big names and popular faces.
Among them, one familiar face stood out for many, a giant octopus named Marcellus. This was Alfred Molina, and if that name rings a bell, then you're not alone. He's the man behind one of the most beloved Spider-Man villains ever put on screen, and this time he returns as someone completely different. Here's ehat you need to know about him.
Alfred Molina in Remarkably Bright Creatures

In Remarkably Bright Creatures, Marcellus is the narrator, a giant Pacific octopus living in a small-town aquarium who forms a bond with the night-shift cleaning woman, Tova, played here by Sally Field. The character is the emotional spine of the whole story.
The author has said she built the human characters around Marcellus, after finding inspiration in YouTube videos of octopuses breaking out of their aquarium enclosures and generally causing mischief. That origin story alone tells you what kind of character he is: sharp, sardonic, smarter than anyone in the room.
The production also filmed hours of real footage of Agnetha, a Giant Pacific octopus housed at the Vancouver Aquarium, and supplemented that with CGI for the scenes requiring more precise movement. Practical and digital, blended together, with Molina's voice anchoring all of it.
So where have we seen the actor before?
Now, the reason Molina feels like such a specific and slightly delicious casting choice is that he has a very real history with tentacles. He famously played Otto Octavius, a scientist whose four mechanical arms fused to his spine and turned him into the villain Doctor Octopus, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 back in 2004. Which means audiences are used to seeing him with more arms than he has.
Then in 2021, he reprised Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire, a multiverse ensemble that sent fans completely sideways. It was an iconic return, particularly as fans felt nostalgic and remembered the first movi he was in.
Molina's debut came as Satipo, Indiana Jones' ill-fated guide in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. From there he built a reputation as one of the most versatile character actors in the business. He received BAFTA nominations for Frida in 2002 and An Education in 2009, and earned Emmy nominations for The Normal Heart and the FX series Feud: Bette and Joan. He also is the recipient of three Tony Award nominations for his Broadway work, playing characters in Art, Fiddler on the Roof, and Red. That's a diverse and legendary character, and Remarkably Bright Creatures's Marcellus joins that roster.
