The Resident Evil reboot by Zach Cregger is slated to make its release next year, on 18th September, 2026.
The Resident Evil film series is a very popular franchise of horror films. It is derived from a Japanese video game, which is also known as 'Biohazard.' These games made their release back in 1996 by a company named Capcom.
The films of this franchise follow the plot of a zombie apocalypse, where Alice, a former paramilitary, counters the company that has been instrumental in creating the apocalypse.
Seven films have been made till now in the Resident Evil film series, with its latest release in 2021, namely Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. After 5 years, in 2026, the new Resident Evil reboot shall be back to grace our screens.

Resident Evil reboot just revealed its release date!
The release date of the Resident Evil Reboot has been scheduled to be on 18th September 2026.
Actor and director Zach Cregger, who has previously directed the acclaimed horror film Barbarian (2022), this time comes back to weave magic with yet another horror in this reboot. He shall be writing this film too, along with Shay Hatten.
Even though no plot or cast details have been known as of now, in this reboot too, Zach Cregger shall be deriving the story based on the video games as well. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger shall build on the core crux and 'horror' element of the original games.
As spoken to Deadline, Zach Cregger expressed his feelings about associating with the iconic film franchise, as he spoke:
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor."
Along with Barbarian, Cregger has also directed Miss March (2009) and the upcoming Weapons (2016).
His acting credits include The Whitest Kids U'Know (2007-2011), Friends with Benefits (2011), Guys with Kids (2012-2013), and Wrecked (2016-2018).
One of Sony's "most important releases of 2026": Resident Evil reboot
After a highly competitive auction for its reboot, reportedly between big banners including Netflix and Warner Bros., Sony Pictures has finally landed with its rights to release the Resident Evil reboot under Sony's Columbia Pictures.
As per Deadline, the president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Sanford Panitch, has expressed his faith, praise, and excitement for Zach Cregger's creative lens. He also mentioned the film to be 'one of the most important releases' of next year, as he states:
“Zach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.”
The Resident Evil reboot shall be produced by PlayStation Productions, along with Miri Yoon and Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment.
Constantin Films, a company that had acquired the rights to the film title right from its beginning, shall also be producing it along with PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment.
As per reports at The Hollywood Reporter, sources reveal that the companies are expecting the filming of the Resident Evil reboot to commence by summer of this year.
Looks like the forthcoming year, 2026, is going to be a crucial one for director Zach Cregger, with the releases of his two highly anticipated films.
