The 2011 action thriller drama Drive has achieved the status of a modern cult classic over the years - thanks to Hossein Amini's unique storytelling and an impeccable direction by BAFTA nominee Nicolas Winding Refn. Besides all the creative genius, it is Ryan Gosling's stunning presence that got the James Sallis adaptation its deserved praise while also bagging solid scores on Rotten Tomatoes.Ryan Gosling portrayed a getaway driver (aka "The Driver") in the movie, who is a car mechanic and a stunt double working in Hollywood. However, he gets involved with the underworld following a wrong turn of events. The story takes into account another parallel layer where a woman named Irene (played by Carey Mulligan) is introduced into The Driver's life, thus adding drama as a major element.Right from the first sequence of Drive, an intense heist and a car chase keep the audience hooked to their seats. It is at this point only that we notice how Drive also utilized the unique night skyline of Los Angeles (where the film was shot), formed by the orange-yellow streetlights. It was one of the last times when these lights were used in a Hollywood movie, and then white LEDs took over.Drive used orange-yellow streetlights of LA to add the perfect mood to Ryan Gosling's action thriller View this post on Instagram Instagram PostNicolas Winding Refn filmed Drive back in 2011 across various parts of Los Angeles, and many of the car chase and action sequences were shot during the night. This was intentionally done to capture the unique night lights of LA that offered a yellowish-orange glow, which is not something that is seen frequently in movies these days.Drive is also one of the last films where this night feature of LA was beautifully and accurately portrayed, as around 160,000 streetlamps were replaced with LEDs by late 2019-early 2020 (which also accounted for around 98% of the total number of lights in the city). It thus resulted in the skyline taking up a rather cooler tone that gives off a white glow, opposite of what we witnessed in the 2011 thriller. All the night sequences in Drive have apparently been color-corrected against the yellow tone to maintain a consistent grade. Slow-building suspense is a major element of the movie that helps the plot to unravel, and this portrayal further adds to that theme. Here's an official synopsis of Drive, per IMDb:"A mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver."As mentioned already, Golden Globe-winning star Ryan Gosling played the role of the protagonist, The Driver. Academy Award-nominated actress Carey Mulligan portrayed a woman named Irene Gabriel, who is The Driver's neighbor.Oscar Isaac was a part of Drive's creative team as well and portrayed Irene's problematic husband (Standard Gabrie), who also had connections to Albanian mobsters.
