After getting his heart broken in the city of stars, Ryan Gosling is reaching for the stars in Project Hail Mary, his latest sci-fi adventure film based on Andy Weir's eponymous novel. Amazon MGM Studios unveiled the first look at the 2025 CinemaCon before officially releasing the trailer on June 30. It has earned record-breaking views in its initial week.

According to Deadline, the trailer has crossed 400 million global views within the first week of its premiere. With these numbers, the clip has earned the most views from the studio. The report also reveals that it is the biggest trailer launch for the studios, whether for the combined banner or the separate entities of Amazon and MGM. That is a massive record for this film, months ahead of its theatrical release.

That's why, after the announcement, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shared their gratitude in their X (formerly Twitter) posts. Their captions said,

"Holy Moly! Thank you, all you glorious, generous fans of movies/books / near light speed space travel / the Sun for pushing the trailer for Project Hail Mary past 400 million views – the most in one week for a non-sequel non-remake original film trailer… ever. Can’t wait to thank some of you in person at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H with our pals Ryan, Andy, and Drew….and a few other surprises…"

In 2018, Ryan Gosling stepped foot in outer space in Damien Chazelle's First Man, a space biopic about Neil Armstrong and his ambitious mission. The Canadian star will now take another leap for mankind in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's Project Hail Mary. Its official plot synopsis reads,

"Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction... but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone."

The official trailer shows Gosling as a man trying to figure out a way to finish a mission he doesn't even remember the basics of. Joining him in this journey is Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) as Ryland's superior, Eva Stratt. The cast also includes Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Industry), Milana Vayntrub (This is Us), and Liz Kingsman (Parlement), among others.

The screenplay is written by Drew Goddard, who previously penned the script for another Andy Weir adaptation: The Martian for director Ridley Scott. Gosling is one of the producers behind the project, besides the directing duo of Lord and Miller, Weir, Amy Pascal, Rachel O'Connor, and Aditya Sood.

Project Hail Mary is scheduled to be theatrically released on March 20, 2026.
