Ryan Reynolds has starred as the fast-talking superhero Deadpool in several installments. All the films have been a critical and commercial success. Last year, he shared the screen with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. Reports are now suggesting that the actor is currently developing a crossover film of Deadpool and X-Men.

If this happens, the audience will get to witness a funny take on the crossover between two different worlds, like Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Fans of the franchise are reportedly excited about this new development. So let us find out more details about it.

Ryan Reynolds working on a Deadpool X-Men crossover film

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds is working on a Deadpool film that will possibly feature X-Men characters. Although the idea hasn't been pitched yet, Reynolds is reportedly planning to play a supporting role as Deadpool, with three or four X-Men superheroes taking the lead. So it's obvious that Reynolds will not be the main hero, and the story might mostly revolve around the mutants.

In a Time Magazine interview, which he did in April 2025, Reynolds hinted at having an ensemble film in the future.

"I'm writing a little something right now, that's, I don't know, it's an ensemble. But, I like that he's isolated. If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's his wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that."

The writing Ryan Reynolds was referring to might be the X-Men crossover film. But he has yet to pitch it to Marvel Studios, which will take the final call. The franchise's recent outing, Deadpool & Wolverine, was directed by Shawn Levy and brought back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The film was written by Reynolds, Levy, Zeb Wells, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick, among others. Reynolds and Levy also produced it with Kevin Feige and Lauren Shuler Donner. Jackman announced that he would be retiring from the character Logan/Wolverine after doing Logan. However, the actor decided to return with this installment.

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel's talk show, Reynolds spoke about writing the film. He said,

“One of the scariest things I’ve ever done in my life is writing for you. Well, Wolverine, you’ve got a legacy there that is really, I mean, one of the most, I think, one of the most iconic legacies in all comic book movies.”

Ryan Reynolds first played the superhero in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine where the character shows up in the climax with his mouth stitched. He then did the solo film Deadpool in 2016 and its sequel Deadpool 2 in 2018. Both these films managed to do well at the box office.

In the past, some characters from the X-Men universe have appeared in the Deadpool franchise. Fans will have to wait for an official reveal of which three or four mutant superheroes are going to feature in the next Deadpool film.
