Quentin Tarantino clears the air on why he is not directing the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up.
Titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the upcoming film is supposed to follow the past of Brad Pitt's character, a stunt double to a Hollywood star. Tarantino wrote the script for this sequel and is producing it, but David Fincher has taken over the directorial duties. Until it was announced in April, many believed that it might be Tarantino's next film.
Tarantino finally revealed what he thinks of this decision in a recent episode of The Church of Tarantino podcast. During this conversation, he had nothing but praise for the fellow filmmaker.
“I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account,” said Tarantino.
The Pulp Fiction director believes that Fincher is one of the best filmmakers. So, he sees Fincher's interest in his project as an honor and a litmus test for the quality of his work.
Quentin Tarantino wants his final film to help him explore uncharted territories

Quentin Tarantino has had a long career with more highs than lows, since he has often preferred quality over quantity. Hence, instead of directing every one of his ideas, he decided to work on a limited number of feature films.
The filmmaker has previously mentioned that he hopes to work on only ten films throughout his career. In 2014, he explained the reason during his extensive interview with Deadline.
“I don’t believe you should stay onstage until people are begging you to get off. — I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more," he said.
He also added,
"It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan."
In that context, the 2019 film, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, was Quentin Tarantino's 9th feature directorial project. That's why his fans were excited to see the film his final feature film. A few years later, some sources claimed that Tarantino's final movie would be called The Movie Critic, and it would be connected to the world pre-established in his 9th film.
In the podcast, Quentin Tarantino spoke in detail about this idea, why he wanted to make it, and why he scrapped that idea for his final film.
“I really, really like it. There was a challenge that I gave to myself when I did it — Can I take the most boring profession in the world and make it an interesting movie?" he said.
Tarantino wanted to make this monotonous profession into something that would excite people, seeing someone who "actually watches movies."
“Who wants to see a TV show about a fucking movie critic? Who wants to see a movie called The Movie Critic? That was the test. If I can actually make a movie or a TV show about someone who actually watches movies interesting, that is an accomplishment," he added.
When asked about the script for the Netflix movie, Quentin Tarantino spoke about why he chose not to direct it himself.
“I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me," he said.
It seems like Tarantino didn't want to explore the same world he had already explored in his earlier films. So, he chose not to direct the Cliff Booth film.
“This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory," he said.
Although not as a director, Quentin Tarantino will still be closely involved with this project, according to the rest of his comments.
The film hasn't yet received an official release date, but an exclusive Deadline report revealed the cast, which includes Brad Pitt, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Elizabeth Debicki, Corey Fogelmanis, Scott Caan, and JB Tadena.
