There’s a new favorite horror film in Hollywood, and it just crossed another box-office milestone. Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s moody, Southern gothic horror epic, has officially crossed the $350 million mark worldwide, burning past expectations with sky-high achievements. It’s not just a hit, it’s a full-blown cultural possession.
Set in 1930s Mississippi and dripping with supernatural dread, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role that’s been hailed as career-defining and chilling in all the right ways. From its haunting visuals to its poetic violence, the film has done the impossible: made horror a prestige genre again. Now, with over $267 million earned domestically, Sinners joins the elite circle of horror legends like The Exorcist, Jaws, and Get Out, becoming one of the rare horror films in history to pass $200 million in the U.S.
Critics and audiences are on the same page for once, giving it a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. It’s streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV, with a physical release dropping July 8, which includes several deleted scenes from the film for fans to watch.
But what’s really remarkable is how this ambitious $90 million project was once considered a risky bet. Now? It’s one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror films in history, sitting comfortably high up as one of Coogler and Jordan's career highlights.
What is Sinners about?
Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners revolves around twin brothers and World War I veterans, Smoke and Stack Moore, played by Michael B. Jordan, who come back to their hometown after years with the Chicago mob. With stolen cash, they buy a sawmill from a racist landowner to start a juke joint for the local Black community. Their cousin Sammie, a budding guitarist, joins despite warnings from his pastor dad that blues music has supernatural ties.
The joint brings together a mix of characters: a pianist, a cook practicing Hoodoo, and a Chinese shopkeeper couple supplying goods. But supernatural trouble brews when Remmick, an Irish vampire, and his thralls target the club, offering money and music in exchange for entry. Drama escalates as the twins face betrayal, vampire attacks, and a violent clash involving local Klan members.
Sinners blends a lot more than just horror and supernatural elements. It has profound cultural themes, highlighting and celebrating Black culture and paying homage to the Blues. Newcomer Miles Caton, who stars as Sammie shines throughout, along with his godly vocals gracing the soundtrack that adds even more beauty to the narrative.
The film also stars Hailee Steinfield, Wunmi Mosaku and Jayme Lawson. But the highlight, of course is Jordan's performance as the twins and how he brings so much alterity to the characters of the two twins.
Sinners is available to stream on Prime Video.
