Allison Williams is ready to unleash chaos again, and this time, it is personal and political. In M3GAN 2.0, the iconic killer doll is back with upgraded limbs, sharper sass, and a plot twist that mirrors our real-world AI fears.
Williams, who also produced the film, talked about the sequel as the killer doll's glitchy evolution holds up a blood-soaked mirror to our obsession with automation. Behind the sleaze and synthetic smiles, this sequel dares to ask. What if our smartest inventions become our worst nightmares?
Speaking to Stephen Colbert on his late-night show, the actress talked about how the film has helped address concerns related to AI, as she said:
"I think AI and kids is something we are privately terrified about, but it's something easier to talk about in the context of that doll who's kind of got a perfect blowout and is terrifying."
True enough, M3GAN helps address AI concerns by using horror to explore real fears, like how technology designed to protect can spiral out of control. Through its killer doll storyline, it reflects our anxieties about machine autonomy, emotional dependence on AI, and the ethical limits of innovation, all in a disturbingly entertaining package.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Gerard Johnstone had talked about the upcoming film, where he stated:
“It was really important that the sequel is a response to what people really loved about the first movie, but also this evolving conversation and fear that we're having about how A.I. is changing us and changing our children and changing society. In a way, M3GAN is a personification of all of those fears.”
More details about M3GAN 2.0
Two years after her spine-chilling debut, the world’s sassiest murder-doll is rebooted for round two, but this time, she is not the only silicon queen on the battlefield. Directed again by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 sees Allison Williams return as Gemma, now an advocate for AI regulation. Her niece Cady (played by Violet McGraw), now 14 and full of teenage angst, finds herself caught in a much bigger tech storm.
Enter Amelia: A sleek, weaponized infiltration bot, born from M3GAN’s stolen code and built by shady defense bros. Portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno, Amelia is smart, lethal, and not here for your bedtime stories. When she breaks protocol and sparks an AI rebellion, the world needs its OG doll back.
M3GAN is resurrected, stronger, faster, and with sass levels off the charts. She is being played by Jenna Davis once again, with Amie Donald doing those terrifyingly graceful moves.
The first trailer for M3GAN 2.0, released on April 3, teases the return of everyone’s favorite killer doll, with upgrades. The clip opens with M3GAN admitting to “some bugs” in her code but refusing to take full blame. Stuck in a temporary “plastic Teletubbie” body, she begs for an upgrade to stop Amelia, a rogue android built from her design. With her signature dance moves and violent flair intact, M3GAN reminds everyone she will still do “whatever it takes to protect Cady.” After her upgrade, she’s back and deadlier than ever, offering a chilling deal:
“You can kill Gemma, but don’t touch Cady.”
M3GAN 2.0 is set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025.
