In a world full of serious documentaries, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise flushes all expectations down the drain, and that's a good thing.

Part of Netflix’s Trainwreck docu-series, this bizarre, funny, and deeply gross story has taken over screens. Why? Because it's about a Carnival cruise ship that turned into a floating disaster… and people love a good mess.

“We knew that we had something quite special with this film,” said director James Ross. “I mean, even the title Poop Cruise does jump out from maybe your usual fare.”

That quirky name, by the way, wasn’t just a joke; it became the heart of the documentary’s identity.

In 2013, headlines around the world couldn’t stop talking about a Carnival cruise ship that lost power in the Gulf of Mexico. What followed was one of the strangest stories to ever hit the high seas.

In Trainwreck: Poop Cruise we see the ship was supposed to take passengers from Texas to Mexico. But after a fire knocked out the power, things got bad. Without electricity, toilets stopped working. No air conditioning. No hot food. No proper sanitation.

People were told to poop in red bags. Showers became makeshift toilets. Tents were set up on decks to escape the smell and heat. The ship was eventually tugged back to shore after several hellish days.

“There was one moment when we said, ‘Are we all definitely going to call it Poop Cruise?’” Ross recalled.
“Absolutely. There is no way that we're changing the title. It has to be Poop Cruise. It was Poop Cruise from the start, and if the suit fits, wear it.”

Ross says he felt early on that this story was going to blow up, maybe literally and figuratively.

“It stands out from your normal collection of documentaries that might be out there,” he noted.

And it sure does. The title Poop Cruise sounds ridiculous, yes. But it’s also unforgettable. According to Ross, that was the point. They wanted people to laugh, and then watch.

In Trainwreck: Poop Cruise what could’ve been a tragic tale is told with just enough humor to keep viewers engaged. It’s like mixing disaster with a dose of toilet humor… because that's exactly what happened.

Imagine paying for a relaxing trip and ending up living in a tent with a plastic bag for a toilet. That’s exactly what happened to over 3,000 passengers and 1,000 crew members in Trainwreck: Poop Cruise.

The electrical failure caused every toilet onboard to stop working. As panic set in, passengers were told to use red biohazard bags and dispose of them in bins. “Horrifying” doesn't even begin to cover it.

No air. No functioning bathrooms. People are sleeping on the decks. At one point, the cruise line gave out alcohol to ease tensions… not the best move. Things got messy, literally and socially.

Reporters covered the saga nonstop. Passengers took videos. Stories ranged from funny to downright disturbing. The cruise line's image took a major hit.

Would Ross consider making a follow-up of Trainwreck: Poop Cruise?

“I mean, that sequel writes itself!” he laughed. “It’s like Naked Gun, that kind of thinking. ‘No. 2’ does feel like it’s screaming to be made, right?”

There were thousands on board, and only a few got the spotlight. The rest of their stories? Untapped gold for another documentary.

The reason Poop Cruise stands out isn’t just the shock factor. It’s the storytelling, the humor, and the raw human experience. From the title to the testimonials, it’s unforgettable. And yes, we’re still waiting for Poop Cruise No. 2.

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is a wild ride through one of the most bizarre cruise ship disasters ever. With its perfect blend of humor, horror, and humanity, it deserves every bit of attention it's getting. Director James Ross captured lightning in a poop bag, and if there's justice in the entertainment world, the sequel will sail soon.
