Mel Brooks's classic Star Wars spoof is making a return with Spaceballs 2, an upcoming sequel to his 1987 sci-fi comedy film, starring Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, and Brooks, among others.
Co-written and directed by Brooks, this parody film came out more than a decade after the release of George Lucas's Star Wars trilogy. It eventually became a cult favourite for comedy fans, similar to spoofs like The Naked Gun. So, it is the second spoof project to be brought back to life with a cast made up of some new and returning faces.
The Thunderbolts* star Lewis Pullman will be a part of the Spaceballs 2 ensemble, over forty years after his father, Bill Pullman, starred in the first film. Joining him in the cast are Keke Palmer (One of Them Days), Anthony Carrigan (Superman), and Josh Gad (Adulthood), who will bring their comedic talent to the screens.
Bill Pullman will also return to the cast alongside Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper) will direct this project with a script from Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. Gad and Greenbaum will also produce this film with Kevin Salter.
Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment will round out the producing team. While the exact plot details have not been revealed, it is expected to be a spoof similar to the original. The film has entered its production stage, as per the latest THR report, and is slated to be theatrically released in 2027.
Here's everything else we know about Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis's Spaceballs 2
Amazon MGM Studios is bringing Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis's cult classic parody film with a sequel, dubbed Spaceballs 2. The studio announced the project in June 2025 through a video shared above.
It begins with a graphic text similar to the introduction in Star Wars movies. However, unlike them, Mel Brooks' film pokes fun at several franchise projects that have been released over the years, including many Star Wars prequels, sequels, and prequels to sequels; 7 Jurassic Park movies; and 2 Robert Downey Jr. roles in the MCU, among other things.
In the end, Mel Brooks appears on the screen to introduce his project. Here's what he says,
"After forty years, we asked: 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie."
Almost a year before this announcement, Josh Gad, co-writer and cast member of Spaceballs 2, seemingly teased it through an Instagram post with an image from the third draft of his script. The caption read:
"Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on, and I am so freaking excited. Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you, boys!"
In September 2025, Entertainment Tonight shared a video of the table read for the project. According to the official reports, the studio is currently eyeing a theatrical release in 2027.
