Splitsville is an upcoming comedy film that had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Michael Angelo Covino-directed film is slated to be released on August 22, 2025, by Neon. Here is the official synopsis as per IMDb:

When Ashley asks for a divorce, the good-natured Carey runs to his friends, Julie and Paul, for support. Their secret to happiness is an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos.

The Fifty Shades of Grey actress is starring in her second complicated love story movie this year. In Materialists, Dakota plays Lucy, a smart New York matchmaker caught in a love triangle with two very different men: Harry, a wealthy financier, and John, her struggling-actor ex.

Ahead of Splitsville's theatrical release, the makers have released the film's official trailer that provides a glimpse into the confusing romantic entanglements in the movie.

Splitsville's official trailer is out now, and it runs for two minutes and 26 seconds. It begins with Ashley (Adria Arjona) saying that she wants a divorce. To which her husband, Carey (Kyle Marvin), insists she not say that. Ashley then tells him that she has been cheating on him for a while. Their conversation then takes a hilarious turn as Carey asks her how many times she's been unfaithful.

The character then runs away and meets Julie (Dakota Johnson), who lives with Paul (played by the film's director). The two reveal that they are not monogamous, which further creates more chaos and confusion among everyone. Overall, the film is a comedy-drama set against the backdrop of marital life and the chaos it brings.

Splitsville is the directorial work of Michael Angelo Covino, who has written it with Kyle Marvin. It is produced by the two, along with Dakota Johnson, Samantha Racanelli, Emily Korteweg, Ryan Heller, Ro Donnelly and Jeff Deutchman. Here is a list of its cast members:

  • Kyle Marvin as Carey
  • Simon Webster as Rus
  • Michael Angelo Covino as Paul
  • Dakota Johnson as Julie
  • Adria Arjona as Ashley
  • Nicholas Braun as Matt
  • Charlie Gillespie as Jackson
  • Prince Rodn3y as Three
  • Jessika Mathurin as Keri
  • Tyrone Benskin as Dr. Ott
  • Stephen Adekolu as Sutton
  • Nahéma Ricci as Antoneta
  • Letitia Brookes as Officer Lank
  • David Castañeda
  • O-T Fagbenle

Earlier, Covino spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about making the film. He said,

“The goal was to make something wildly entertaining and emotionally honest. Something that feels familiar in the setup but constantly surprises in the execution.”

He further spoke about the film not being a commentary on open marriages.

"The intention was very much not to make any kind of commentary on open relationships. I don’t have an agenda — Kyle and I don’t have a horse in this race. We’re not trying to make a statement about whether it works or doesn’t work. Everything we do starts from character. For us, it’s always about exploring these absurd situations."

The director then spoke about the two leading actresses in Splitsville.

"We really lucked out — casting two incredible actresses who are wildly funny, but each in a way that felt perfectly tailored to their characters. And we evolved the characters once Dakota and Audrey came on. We worked with them to adjust and refine things — to find specificity and rework certain aspects of the roles to better match their strengths and what they wanted to do with the characters."

The film is coming on the heels of Johnson's other film in the same zone, Materialists. Are you excited about Splitsville?
