Star Trek, the 2009 film directed by J.J. Abrams, was the 11th installment in the overall franchise, as well as a reboot of the original television series. Abrams has also produced it with Damon Lindelof, while the screenplay is by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Per IMDb, its official synopsis reads,
The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.
Chris Pine plays the role of James T. Kirk in the film, and the character gets promoted to captain rather quickly.
Here's why James Kirk in Star Trek was promoted fast
Star Trek features Chris Pine portraying James T. Kirk, who is on the USS Enterprise, as his team and the planet face a threat from Nero. Kirk quickly jumps ranks and is appointed the Captain by the film's end. The film was intended to serve as a reboot of the franchise, and so Kirk had to be given an origin story within the screenplay of one film. While it seems rushed, it introduced his origin story seamlessly. The character became victorious but managed to surpass positions like commander and lieutenant.
This arc would have taken a few episodes if it were a television series. The character would have gone through a proper process before being appointed captain. The promotion also echoed with the character played by William Shatner in the original television series. Shatner's version was brought up in the Prime Universe, which is different than Pine's backstory.
If they took more time, the promotion would have to shown in a sequel, and it is hard to second-guess how that would be received by fans. While it may have seemed a bit forced to some, Star Trek took the liberty and used an alternate reality. This way, the makers were not forced to follow the franchise continuity.
The film had its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on April 7, 2009, and it was subsequently released theatrically on May 8. Upon release, the film received a positive response and grossed $385.7 million at the global box office. Its success inspired two sequels — Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. The film also won an Oscar for Best Makeup. Its cast members include:
- Chris Pine as James T. Kirk
- Zachary Quinto as Spock
- Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime
- Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy aka Bones
- Zoe Saldaña as Nyota Uhura
- Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott aka Scotty
- John Cho as Hikaru Sulu
- Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov
- Eric Bana as Captain Nero
- Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike
Despite making this film, J.J. Abrams confessed in a The Guardian interview that he was never into the television series growing up. He said:
"[The series] always felt like a silly, campy thing. I remember appreciating it, but feeling like I didn't get it. I felt it didn't give me a way in. There was a captain, there was this first officer, they were talking a lot about adventures and not having them as much as I would've liked. Maybe I wasn't smart enough, maybe I wasn't old enough."
