The upcoming DC superhero film starring Milly Alcock, Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, has begun filming this January. Directed by Craig Gillespie, who has previously directed Lars and the Real Girl (2007), I, Tonya (2017), and the recently successful Cruella (2021), this time comes with Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, which is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow (2021-2022).
Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, an installment of DC Universe's 'Chapter One: Gods and Monsters', is anticipated to bring forward a full-fledged, in-depth look into the storyline of Supergirl on a grand scale, as her story deserves that due credit. Previously, Supergirl a.k.a. Kara Zor-El made appearances in films and TV shows such as in the most recent The Flash (2023), the television series Supergirl (2015-2021), and the 1984 film Supergirl. Hence we need a full-length, independent, and nuanced showcasing of Supergirl's complex journey, something which applies to every woman hero in general.
Who do we see in Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow?
Australian actor Milly Alcock, who is known for her work in Upright (2019-2022), and her most popular portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's highly successful TV series House of the Dragon (2022-2024), is now set to play the lead role of Supergirl a.k.a Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. According to the DC's co-CEO, Milly Alcock came first to his mind during the casting of the character, and Tom King too felt that Milly Alcock as Supergirl was an apt casting.
Along with Milly Alcock, we have a promising cast of actors including Matthias Schoenaerts, who is joining the cast as the primary antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills, along with Eve Ridley essaying the role of Ruthye Marye Knoll. We also have Jason Momoa from the massively popular Game of Thrones fame to be on board, who is portraying the role of Lobo.
David Krumholtz from Lousy Carter (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) fame is roped in to play Supergirl's father, and for Supergirl's mother, we have Emily Beecham from Hail Caesar! (2016) and Cruella (2021).
We shall also get to witness the powerful and adorable super pooch Krypto the Super Dog in this DC installment.
What do we know more about Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow?
The story of Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow begins when Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El a.k.a Supergirl encounters Ruthye, who seeks vengeance as her planet has been demolished and her father killed, and that leads to Supergirl joining in the fight to bring justice to her.
DC's co-CEO James Gunn revealed in 2023 that the film to go on floors and also confirmed about having Ana Nogueira penned down the script of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
James Gunn talks about how Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow shall take the audience to unexpected places in the way they portray the intense character of Supergirl, by stating:
“We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth. She is much more hard-core and not the Supergirl we’re used to.”
Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and is set to make its theatrical release on 26th June 2026 in the United States.
