As Superman closes up on its theatrical run, James Gunn is letting fans in on the behind-the-scenes details about the film. One such project brought forth a big tease for what Gunn might have for Superman in the future, and fan theories are already on the rise.

A behind-the-scenes featurette called Adventures in the Making of Superman gives fans an unexpected tease of what James Gunn might have cooking for the future of the franchise. At the 2:18 mark, a rough storyboard sketch flashes by showing Superman, Supergirl, and Krypto soaring through the sky together.

Right below them, there’s the unmistakable outline of a bald head covered in glowing nodes. For longtime readers, that can only mean one thing: Brainiac.

Whether or not this was intentional foreshadowing, the idea of pairing Superman and Supergirl against one of Kal-El’s most dangerous foes seems to be living rent-free in Gunn’s mind. He’s even admitted on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that he considered Brainiac as the villain of Superman before ultimately choosing Lex Luthor.

Brainiac could also be an Easter Egg to a very important detail in the Superman movie: How the message sent by his Kryptonian parents was lost and altered, and he was not able to listen to their original intent of sending him to Earth. It's a likely plotline that could be teased in later movies.

This gives fans a new edge and a tease into what Superman's sequel could look like. Although nothing is confirmed as of now, Brainiac could be a perfect villain for whatever adventure Gunn has set for Superman next.

Created in 1958 by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, Brainiac has gone through countless reinventions. Sometimes he’s an alien from Colu, other times a machine or an advanced AI, but he always embodies the same terrifying idea: an intellect so vast that entire civilizations are reduced to trophies in his collection. His signature move is shrinking down entire cities and bottling them away, Kandor from Krypton being his most famous prize. That’s why many call him the collector of worlds.

Recent interpretations, like Superman: The Animated Series and My Adventures with Superman, have leaned into making him a Kryptonian AI gone rogue, which would fit seamlessly with the lore Gunn introduced in his first film.

And honestly, he’s the perfect next step. Lex Luthor has already had his turn, so bringing in Brainiac would finally give audiences a live-action version of a villain who’s long overdue for the big screen.

So if those doodles in the featurette are any indication, Superman’s next flight might bring together family, legacy, and one of DC’s most formidable villains at last.

Superman is now in theaters.
