Sydney Sweeney is currently trading glam for grit in her most physically demanding role yet. Stepping into the shoes, and gloves, of legendary boxer Christy Martin, the Euphoria star has gone through through a jaw-dropping transformation that’s already making headlines. This includes 30 pounds of muscle, bruised knuckles, and months of sweat-soaked training sessions.
Under the direction of David Michôd, the biopic promises to pack just as much emotional punch as the literal ones. Speaking to W Magazine about the transformation, the actress stated:
“I loved it. I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour. My body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”
More details about Sydney Sweeney's Christy Martin biopic
Sydney Sweeney is stepping far beyond her usual comfort zone to portray boxing icon Christy Martin in the untitled new biopic that is being directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes. The film promises to throw us straight into the fire, tracing Christy’s rise as one of America’s most fearless female boxers in the 1990s, then swerving hard into the gut-wrenching story of her survival after a brutal attempted murder by her husband in 2010.
Leading the biopic is Sydney Sweeney, who, rather than portraying Christy, is breathing life into the lines written for her. As both the star and producer, Sweeney is diving into a transformation that’s as physically gruelling as it is emotionally. She has reportedly endured a punishing training regime, sharpened her edges, and emerged almost unrecognizable, not just in muscle, but in mindset. Insiders are already buzzing about her commitment to authenticity, hinting that this performance might just be her knockout punch.
Rounding out the powerhouse cast are Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman as Don King. The film is a heavyweight collaboration between Anonymous Content, Black Bear Pictures, Votiv, and more, with producers including Sweeney, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, and David Michôd.
While the project is still untitled and is awaiting the announcement of a release date, it promises to hit hard, with a true story of grit, survival, and the woman who redefined the world of boxing. As for Sydney Sweeney, this role could very well be a redefining moment in her career.
