Black Bear to release Christy in November
Black Bear Pictures will be releasing Christy on November 7, 2025, in North America. This will be the maiden US theatrical release of the studio's new distribution outfit. The film is helmed by David Michôd, who has also written it with Katherine Fugate and Mirrah Foulkes.
Sydney Sweeney, who is portraying ex-boxer Christy Martin in the film, is also a producer, along with Michôd, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Justin Lothrop, Brent Stiefel, and Teddy Schwarzman.
The American distribution arm of Black Bear was launched in 2025 and has been operating in Canada, Ireland, and the UK. They plan to release around 12 films every year.
The film's official synopsis, as per Letterboxd:
The true story of formidable Christy Martin, who rose to fame as America’s most successful female boxer in the 1990s. A naturally gifted fighter, Christy’s life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager and later husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Christy’s charisma, good looks, and unwavering resilience in the ring won her a wide fan base and propelled her to become welterweight champion. Behind this well-honed public persona, Christy tackled personal demons, toxic relationships, and an attempt on her life, proving that a fighter’s hardest-won victories aren’t always in the ring.
Benjamin Kramer, who is the President of Black Bear's US distribution, also issued a statement:
“We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of Christy, a moving portrait of resilience and defiance from visionary filmmaker David Michôd. Led by Sydney Sweeney’s masterful transformation into the iconic Christy, capturing a young woman’s fierce determination to define her own destiny, the film is elevated by Michôd’s elegant direction and enriched by an electric supporting turn from Ben Foster."
He added,
"Both tender and unflinching, Christy is a celebration of persistence, humor, and humanity in the face of unexpected turns. We cannot wait to share it with audiences across the country.”
Christy Martin held the title of WBC female super welterweight in 2009. She went on to become the first female wrestler to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016. She was also listed in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The 2021 documentary film titled Untold: Deal with the Devil chronicled her life and career.
