Happy Gilmore 2 is finally releasing today, and we will get to see Adam Sandler returns to golf action. As teasers and reports suggest, this sequel comes with a grander storyline. Alongside him, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller have reprised their roles from the first film.
Nearly three decades later, the sequel promises a heavy dose of nostalgia. But it’s not the only movie that needed a sequel. Sandler appeared in an interview with Screen Rant recently, where he was discussing Happy Gilmore 2 and other films. During this conversation, the interviewer asked about a potential third Grown Ups movie. To that, he said:
"That could happen."
There are currently two movies in the Adam Sandler-led Grown Ups franchise, with the first film holding just 10% critics’ approval on Rotten Tomatoes and the second one even lower with only an 8% rating.
However, they were both box office successes, with the first film earning $272 million against a $75 million budget and the second one making $247 million against an $80 million budget.
What is Adam Sandler's Grown Ups movies about?

Grown Ups is about five friends: Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler), Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James), Kurt McKenzie (Chris Rock), Marcus Higgins (David Spade), and Rob Hilliard (Rob Schneider).
It establishes that these five friends had a basketball mentor who dies thirty years after they won a junior high basketball championship. This event prompts them to reunite.
They’ve grown up, with varying degrees of success in life and family. Adam Sandler’s character belongs to the former group. They all reunite at a lakehouse, and then chaos ensues for the rest of the film.
Grown Ups 2 is set three years after this, and the story introduces Braden (Alexander Ludwig), Marcus’s son from a past relationship. Predictably, things spiral into chaos once again.
This one was nominated for nine Razzies in 2014, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, and more. Thankfully, it never won any of them. Interestingly, Adam Sandler did win Favorite Movie Actor at the 27th Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for this.
Regarding a potential third film, Maria Bello, who played Eric’s wife Sally Lamonsoff, told Flickering Myth that:
"People have talked about it and we’ve heard it might happen. But I don’t know if there is a script, I don’t know what there is. But I hope so because, boy, it’s fun to work with those guys."
Comedian Tom Scharpling uploaded an unofficial script in 2019 and shared it on Twitter (now X) the next year. He said in the post that:
”I was not asked to write it. It is the best thing I will ever do in my life, professional or otherwise. And here it is, my first gift to everyone in 2020."
Other than the Grown Ups franchise, there are other Sandler films that could also use a revival. This includes, but is not limited to, Anger Management (2003), The Waterboy (1998), and more.
