In an interview with Film Slop, director Lotfy Natham spoke about the film's origin and its biblical connection.
“In the New Testament, you have ‘Is this not the carpenter’s son?’ spoken at one point. There was a time in his life when he was just that. I thought that was very interesting, which has to do with a kind of murkiness to who he was on Earth. I just explored that."
He added,
"I read into the line that Jesus speaks in the New Testament, ‘My God, why have you forsaken me?’ when he's being crucified. I think that to me is the voice of someone who is feeling alienated and abandoned. It’s the only way I can read that line.”
In a Variety interview, Nicholas Cage (who plays Joseph) spoke about The Carpenter's Son.
“I couldn’t think of a more compelling family dynamic than the nativity itself. Particularly as it pertains to Joseph, as parents, we’re all under immense pressure to protect and guide and to keep healthy and keep safe our children. But imagine Joseph, who has been called to protect and guide that which is divine, that which is the son of God, and the pressure he’s under to deliver the divine child to his mission is that times billions."
The film is shot by Simon Beaufils, while Sophie Corra, Monika Willi, and Guillaume Fusil are the editors. Magnolia Pictures has handled the North American distribution, while Le Pacte is overseeing its France release.
