The Conjuring: Last Rites arrived as the final installment in the Conjuring franchise, giving a fitting end to the Warrens' story. First introduced in The Conjuring in 2013, Ed and Lorraine became two of the most popular figures in the genre of horror, and have continued to lead five films in the franchise; all of which led up to the events of The Conjuring: Last Rites. As announced earlier, the film is the last addition to the Conjuring franchise and will mark an ending for the couple.
Tonally, The Conjuring: Last Rites leans harder into family and legacy than some earlier entries. It pairs franchise-standard jump scares with quieter scenes about aging, marriage, and parenthood, even folding the Warrens’ grown daughter Judy into the action so the finale reads like a passing of the torch and a last exorcism rolled into one.
Judy has been a significant part of the franchise since the very first film, and in this film, her character comes to full effect as she joins her parents. This has also started conversations about the possibility of Judy continuing the franchise, and what it could mean for the future of the next phases.
What happens to Ed and Lorraine in The Conjuring: Last Rites?
In The Conjuring: Last Rites, Ed and Lorraine find themselves in an investigation for the Smurl family. Soon enough, things get more murky as Judy finds herself entangled in its demonic activity, and we get to know the Warrens' connection to the haunting.
Producer James Wan opened up about how giving a fitting end to Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson's Lorraine and Ed Warren was the team's topmost priority while making the film. In an interview with Cinema Blend, Wan says,
"I always say people come to the Conjuring films for the scares, but they really stick around for Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, right? Their version of Ed and Lorraine. And that was basically mission one: was to be able to wrap up this series in a way that was emotional, but one that also felt uplifting as well at the same time."
As intended, the film sees the couple finally getting an ending of much peace, as they wrap up the case and walk Judy down the aisle as she marries her sweetheart. The wedding is also attended by Carolyn Perron, Janet Hodgson, and David Glatzel, central characters from the past films and the Warrens' past cases. As they give away their daughter, the couple looks back at their journey and how their faith and trust helped them fight against evil in their past decades of ghost hunting. The film ends with real-life footage of Ed and Lorraine, giving viewers an ending to the real-life couple as well.
In more ways than one, The Conjuring: Last Rites serves as a perfect ending to Ed and Lorraine's legacy on screen and the past decade of their cinematic history. What's left to explore now is how the franchise will move forward, if it does, and if we will see more of Judy Warren in future projects.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is now in theaters.
