The Conjuring: Last Rites’ runtime breaks a decade-old franchise record, details revealed

The Conjuring: Last Rites, the upcoming supernatural horror film, will be the longest one from The Conjuring Universe. It is the ninth installment from the franchise that began with the 2013 film, The Conjuring. According to AMC Theaters, the upcoming film's runtime will be 2 hours and 15 minutes. That puts it only a minute ahead of The Conjuring 2 (2016), which held the longest movie record to date.

Last Rites is said to be the concluding chapter of the film series. So, the film might be trying to bookend it on a note that feels emotionally satisfying for the fans. It may also serve to honor the legacy of Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose testimonies of their encounters with the supernatural have inspired the movies.

Last Rites comes two years after the theatrical release of The Nun II, which followed a story set in 1956 France with Sister Irene as the protagonist coming face to face with a peril.

The 2023 film, directed by Michael Chaves, was a major commercial success, earning over $269 million against its reported $38.5 million budget. The latest Conjuring film shows him returning to the directorial role.

The fourth Conjuring film brings Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga back as Ed and Lorraine Warren, respectively, to solve another mysterious investigation dealing with the supernatural. This time, they will deal with a paranormal case, reportedly inspired by the real-life haunting of the Smurl family.

The film's official synopsis reads as follows:

"The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise."

To follow this tragic incident, filmmaker Michael Chaves worked on a screenplay penned by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Richard Naing, and Ian Goldberg. With a runtime of over two hours, the film will likely do justice to offer a befitting conclusion to the fan-favorite horror series.

The film will offer another haunting chapter in this saga, produced by New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, and Atomic Monster. Through this project, James Wan returns as a producer alongside the current DC co-CEO, Peter Safran. Warner Bros. Pictures handles the film's distribution.
