The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It offered the third chapter in the mainline Conjuring film franchise. Michael Chaves directed this film with a script from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
The plot synopsis, as per Warner Bros., reads,
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” reveals a chilling story of terror, murder, and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren."
It further says,
"One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense."
Toward the end, Lorraine Warren helps Ed and Arne regain their senses from the curse put on them by Kastner's daughter, the occultist, Isla. However, in that process, Isla loses her life to a demon.
Let's see how the Warrens realize the truth about the occultist, and how Lorraine helps Ed be haunted by the visions from the said demon.
What happens during The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It?

The third Conjuring film is set in 1981, when Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) witness an 8-year-old boy's exorcism. David Glatzel, the said boy, is seemingly saved by his older sister's boyfriend, Arne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor), who invites the demon into his body to save the poor kid from the ongoing torture.
Usually, that might have been the end of the documentation from the Warrens, but they are compelled to return to help Arne. They realize that Arne has seemingly murdered his landlord by stabbing him 22 times. As revealed in the synopsis, Arne's case becomes the first of its kind, where the suspect is relieved from his charges on account of demonic possession.
Collider points out that the film differs from the previous installments since it's not about the Warrens going after a demon but a devil worshiper. The publication also notes that even in its supernatural narratives, the film takes some creative liberties, bifurcating from the events of the actual 1981 case explored by the real-life Warrens.
How does Lorraine save Ed in the end?

In The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Ed faces some health-related problems, which become the crux of the film's emotional arc. It happens as the Warrens find a witch's totem in David Glatzel's home. Later, the couple also finds it in the house of another victim from Danvers, Massachusetts, who also died by being stabbed 22 times.
Lorraine connects the dots, and it's with the help of her visions that the detectives discover the murder suspect, who took her own life. It leads the Warren matriarch to witness an occultist trying to influence Arne's mind into killing himself. She protects Arne at the cost of revealing her knowledge of the occultist's existence.
The said worshiper also affects Ed, who tries to kill Lorraine after a similar totem is discovered in their home. By the end, Lorraine learns that the occultist is Isla, the daughter of a former priest. She decides to destroy the occultist's altar to lift the curse. That's when Isla kills her father and curses Arne and Ed. Lorraine saves the latter by reminding him of their love. After Arne is saved, Isla dies at the hands of the demon.
