Let's explore how this Indonesian horror film ends and whether the zombie outbreak is contained or not by the characters.

The plot of The Elixir explored

As The Elixir progresses towards a conclusion, we see that Rudi is also infected. He starts chasing Raihan and Karina, and the two have to go towards Ningsih. Later, Kennes, Bambang, and Rahman light up crackers to distract the zombies from the police station. But this plan fails as the zombies march towards them in large numbers.

Meanwhile, Raihan and others are also trapped because of the zombies. That is when it rains and thunders, which leads to confusion among the undead. This gives everyone enough time to escape. But the two groups struggle to reunite, and the rain stops quickly.

This leads the zombies to once again charge towards them with full force. Subsequently, the ladies manage to get a truck to find the whereabouts of Rahman and Bambang. However, their fate takes a turn as the zombies manage to bite Rahman and Ningsih while Bambang comes under the wheels. Luckily, the latter manages to survive and sets fire to all the crackers and fireworks at his disposal.

This leads to a major fire, and all the zombies are burned to death. All of them leave the police station, but that is when Kennes sees a bite mark on her body. This means that one of the zombies bit her. Raihan and Karina leave the area on a motorbike while Kennes decides to distract all the zombies.

Towards the end of The Elixir, Kennes succumbs and dies. She decides to sacrifice herself as she was already infected. The makers hint that the outbreak will not stop because of the herbal medicine's far wide reach in the country. The last scene is of the Sadimin's who are shown taking the meds and slowly turning into zombies.

While the protagonists managed to kill several zombies, the herbal medicine will cause more people to turn into zombies. So the film ends on a pessimistic note, which is quite a norm in the zombie genre.

The Elixir is streaming on Netflix.
