After a fantabulous opening weekend, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now on a declining run as it loses steam at the box office. The $117 million opener is currently struggling as its earnings have gone down by 66%, Variety reports. The film was released on July 25, 2025, and has earned $368 million globally so far, according to The Numbers. That includes $198 million domestically and $170 million in other territories. That said, so far, so good.

Marvel's first family comes as the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and serves as the second reboot of the series. The Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba-led films collectively made $634 million during their run. However, the Miles Teller and Kate Mara-led reboot turned out to be a box office disaster, as it only earned $168 million against a $120 million budget.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set during the 1960s, unlike its predecessors, which were set during modern times and don't tell their origin stories. In addition to that, the film (alongside Thunderbolts) has also set the stage for Avengers: Doomsday, which is set for a December 2026 release.

Since we saw Tony Stark sacrificing himself for the survival of the universe in Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's films haven't done quite well, other than a few exceptions. However, with the Sebastian Stan-led Thunderbolts, things began returning to the track.

It received global praise from fans and critics alike. However, it didn't really do well commercially. It didn't turn out to be a huge profit, as it made $382 million at the global box office. Given the current box office collection of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the next few updates will undoubtedly take over Thunderbolts.

It is closing MCU's top 30

As of this writing, Matt Shakman's The Fantastic Four: First Steps is closing the top 30 highest-grossing MCU movies. As soon as it breaks the $414 million barrier, that will be its ticket to the list. Captain America: Brave New World, which was also released this year and didn't live up to the legacy of the Chris Evans-led series, made $414 million at the box office and is currently at number 30 on this list.

From there on, the $1 billion mark should be the way if Marvel's first family keeps the box office run healthy. For that, it will see Captain Marvel (2019) will be waiting for it with $1.1 billion in its collection. Ironically, its sequel, The Marvels (2023), remains the worst-performing movie in the MCU with only $200 million in its pocket. The sad part is that it was made on a $270 million production budget.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps was the third-best film in July 2025

The Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby-led film was released at the end of July 2025, but still managed to become the third-best movie in the month, earning $158 million at the domestic box office. The other two films surpassing it were James Gunn's Superman and Joseph Kosinski's F1.
