The Fantastic Four: First Steps brings back the good ol' days for Marvel Studios. The film just crossed the $50 million mark on its domestic opening day collection on Friday, July 25.
The MCU project, directed by Matt Shakman, opened in over 4,125 theaters this week, and it has already earned $57 million at the North American box office, as per reports from Deadline. That puts it at the second spot in terms of domestic opening day figures, behind A Minecraft Movie ($57.1 million) and ahead of DC's Superman ($56.1 million).
The opening day collection of the Fantastic Four film also includes the $24.4 million preview gross. According to the initial projections, the film was expected to earn $100-110 million domestically on its opening weekend, shortly behind its DC competition, Superman, which earned $125 million. Now, Deadline reports that the MCU film may surpass those expectations, going head-to-head with the DCU film to earn about $125 million.
Let's see how its domestic box office numbers fare against other movies out in the theaters.
How is the film holding up against its competitors in theaters?
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is bringing the old-school charm of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee's iconic comics for the first time in the MCU. Before this, the First Family appeared in a few movie releases, but they were not associated with Marvel's MCU extension. The previous movies were poorly received by the critics and are not fondly remembered by fans either.
Thankfully, Marvel and Disney's latest installment venture has worked in their favor. The opening day collection shows promising signs for the film, which is not directly connected to any other MCU project released so far. Based on the early projections, a fantastic A-Cinemascore, and glowing reviews, the film seems to have staying power in the coming weeks.
The new Fantastic Four project has earned the most upon its premiere on July 25, staying ahead of its rival studio DC, whose Superman adaptation earned $7.1 million the same day to earn the second spot. It's not the only blockbuster project that the MCU tentpole is performing well against.
According to Variety, Jurassic World Rebirth is in third place with $3.6 million, F1 is in fourth with $1.8 million, and Smurfs is in fifth with $1.72 million in the North American market.
