The Fantastic Four: First Steps is still in theaters, but its earnings have gone down. Despite that, it still managed to beat one of its companions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just recently, it surpassed the much-acclaimed Captain America film, The Winter Soldier (2014), at the domestic box office.
The Winter Soldier and Civil War (2016) are two movies with a similar score at the review aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, both hold a 90% rating there. However, the latter has more reviews. So, we can say that it has more weightage there. It is also the biggest commercial success in the subseries, having earned $1.1 billion at the global box office. $746 million came from the domestic territory here.
On the other hand, Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned $714 million all in all, and $259.7 million came from the US theaters. The Fantastic Four: First Steps has surpassed that number slightly, as it sits with $259.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
However, it is still a far cry from what Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned globally and holds just $492.9 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was released on July 25, 2025. That means it's been 35 days in theaters. The Winter Soldier was there for about a couple of months. So, if Marvel's first family stays for that long, it may surpass that $714 million mark.
But it has seen a couple of major declines already, despite seeing one of the highest openings in the MCU. So, let's see what awaits this one.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps' box office is still a far cry from the worst Thor film
There are a couple of subseries that were extended beyond trilogies. Captain America did that recently with Brave New World, becoming the worst movie in the subseries. Thor came up with Love and Thunder in 2022, where Christian Bale joined the MCU as a villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
It was the worst movie in the franchise, critically speaking, but made a fortune at the global box office. All in all, it earned $760.9 million, and $343.2 million came from domestic territories.
If we look at the entire franchise, Thor: Ragnarok (2017) remains the best in the subseries and one of the best MCU movies overall. As of this writing, the movie holds a 93% score at Rotten Tomatoes.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of the best critical successes in the franchise

While it may not have exploded as expected at the box office, the Matt Shakman film still manages to become one of the best movies in the MCU, speaking critically. It currently holds an 87% rating on RT's Tomatometer and 91% on the Popcornmeter.
Speaking of critical successes in the MCU, it's the late Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther (2018) that still holds the top spot, followed by Avengers: Endgame (2019), Iron Man (2008), Thor: Ragnarok, and more. The Fantastic Four: First Steps holds the 14th position in this list, followed by Thunderbolts, which was released just before it, Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and more.
