An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men.

The Green Knight revolves around Sir Gawain (played by Dev Patel), who is the nephew of King Arthur. He decides to go against the eponymous Green Knight. Towards the end, Gawain stumbles upon the boat where the fox tells him to go away. Ignoring the fox, Gawain takes the boat and reaches the chapel. There, he decides to wait for Knight throughout Christmas Day for the latter to come out of hibernation. The Knight attacks him with an axe, which Gawain dodges. He then runs away towards the court.

Later on, Gawain is made the king after Arthur passes away. Gawain then leaves Essel (Alicia Vikander) and takes his son with her. He then ties the knot with a noblewoman. Later on, his son grows up and dies in one of the battles. After some time passes, Gawain's family leaves him. At that time, he took out the girdle that he had been wearing forever.

But the viewers are in for a surprise as his son's death and family leaving him were a vision he was having. He finally removes the girdle and kneels in front of The Knight. The latter then tells him, "Off with your head." The last scene of the film features a girl picking a crown from the ground and putting it on her head.

As The Green Knight reached its end, we saw the transformation in Gawain. Initially, he ran away from a fight with Knight. After that, he sees a vision of a life that is not enviable. He sees his son dying and his family leaving him. Gawain then decides to take the blow so that he can avoid such a miserable life in the future. The ending does not show Gawain's beheading, but the last words of the Knight suggest that Gawain accepts his fate with courage.

Through the ending, the makers explore themes like courage, honor, and the consequences of our actions. The last shot hints at the power of time and how the wheel of time levels everyone.

In a Vanity Fair interview, director David Lowery revealed that Gawain is not dead. He said,

“I wanted to write an ending where his head gets chopped off, and that’s a positive thing. That’s a happy ending. He faces his fate bravely, and there’s honor and integrity in that. But that doesn’t mean that he’s dead, he’s killed. He received the blow that he was dealt, and all is set right within the universe of the film.”
