What is the plot of The Housemaid?

Towards the end of The Housemaid, we realize that Nina was intentionally mean towards Mille. This was a facade to trick her husband. We realize that Andrew is a toxic person who is always making her do things she does not want to. He even wants to put her in a mental hospital.

Nina was a captive in her own house. She wanted to escape with her daughter, Cecelia (Indiana Elle). Millie is eventually hired by her in the hope that Andrew might get enticed by her. This will allow Nina to escape with Cecelia.

Millie is put in a tricky situation and has to go through a lot because of Nina. Another aspect of the film is Andrew's toxic nature. The makers don't fully reveal why he is the way he is. One possible reason behind it is the frequent mean remarks from his mother.

The real reason Nina wanted to hire Millie was because of the latter's background. In school, Millie witnessed a girl being sexually assaulted. She then jumped on the guy and k*lled him. However, the guy was rich and good-looking, so no one believed Millie. Even the girl she saved didn't come in her support. This resulted in Millie spending a decade in prison for m*rder.

Nina knew that Millie was desperate for a job and wanted to be out on parole. She's also aware of Millie's dark past, which plays out in the climax. She kills Andrew and even attends his funeral. Nina gives her $100,000. The film ends with Nina giving another housemaid interview, where the interviewer hints that she wants her husband to be killed.

The film ends on an ambiguous note, and director Paul Feig has stated that "Millie is not done." Speaking to Today, Sweeney said:

"We kind of get a taste of where Millie goes and what’s going on. But I want Nina to come back into her life. I feel like Millie really needs Nina."

The original novel is part of a trilogy that showcases Millie working for a different family.
