When it comes to Star Wars, no matter how many years pass, dedicated fans keep revisiting the films, questioning some of their narrative choices, and uncovering new insights along the way. One of these choices was the Jedi failing to realize the truth about Palpatine until Revenge of the Sith. For the uninitiated, it is the third episode/film from George Lucas' prequel trilogy, which began with 1999's The Phantom Menace and concluded in 2005.
Palpatine appears in the 1999 film, but the Jedi do not realize his true identity and cannot stop him until much later. That might be puzzling for the fans who understand the spiritual energy of the Force, which offers the Jedi unique abilities, including the power to foresee events before they happen. However, this power of nearly predicting the future could not help them recognize what Palpatine was up to. The answer lies in the iconic quote:
“The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see the future is.”
However, there is more to it. Some fans might argue that there were times when the Jedi could have suspected Palpatine's true motives and his evil nature. It is no wonder that the same topic is brought up once in a while in Star Wars-related discussions, especially among newer fans, who may have missed the minute details while watching the films. That's when the long-time fans come to the rescue and offer some explanations.
Here's why The Jedi could not stop Palpatine sooner in the Star Wars prequel trilogy
Sheev Palpatine first appeared in the Star Wars original trilogy as the Emperor of the Galactic Emperor. It portrayed him as the master of Darth Vader, which he became after dismantling the Jedi order in the events of the prequel trilogy. He was masterful and cruel, with schemes that allowed him to influence Anakin Skywalker's mind and turn him into his apprentice, Darth Vader. The prequels show his rise to power, which is surprising considering the Jedi's special powers.
Palpatine was a follower of the dark side of the Force and was so powerful that he could conceal his dark aura. However, some characters were still able to sense his cruel intentions sooner, as the Dark Side surrounded him. So, he was a suspect for the Jedi a few times. However, the Jedi couldn't prove his schemes for a few reasons. Palpatine used his power of deception to his advantage. So, even if he orchestrated the Clone Wars, the Jedi couldn't trace them back to him.
Without any strong evidence, the Jedi couldn't make a solid case against Palpatine to the Senate. They were also no strong opponent to the Sith in the political realm. Besides, they were caught in a tricky situation where they could lose either way if they objected to Palpatine's actions. Eventually, by Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine managed to trap them in his deliberate chain of schemes.
