The Lost Bus chronicles events surrounding Kevin, who volunteers to be a part of the rescue mission during a campfire. He, along with Mary and all the kids, is stuck in the devastating fire. While they are moving towards a safe location, smoke turns out to be a big hindrance to travel. The local department of fire prioritizes helping people evacuate and does not put in enough resources to douse the fire.

Both Mary and Kevin start using his shirt as a filter for breathing. At one point, he shuts down the air vent and switches off the bus engine. Soon, the fire catches up, and Kevin has to drive away the bus amid the blazing flames. At one point, the engine gives up, but Kevin fixes it amid heavy smoke and fire.

Kevin's eagerness to meet his son also works as a factor for him to keep driving. Towards the end of The Lost Bus, the bus comes out of the fire, and all the kids are saved. He takes the bus to the Chico evacuation center, where the kids reunite with their respective parents. Kevin also sees his mother at the center and rushes towards his house, which is engulfed in fire. He could only find a picture of himself with his son, Shaun.

As the film inches towards closure, Kevin sees Shaun coming out of a car, who is with his mother. Shaun was happy to see his father, and the two embraced each other. Prior to the fire incident, Kevin had a heated moment with Shaun, which led his wife to label him as not a very good father. While driving the truck through the fire, Kevin was carrying that guilt, and he wanted to fix things. He knew that he was not perfect, but he was willing to change for his family.

Shaun was aware of the dangers his father had gone through, and he forgave his father. The film is based on the true account of a real-life person who gave up a stable job and started driving a school bus to support his education. After the fire incident, he finished his teaching degree and got a job at Fair View School.
