A new rom-com, which is a film adaptation of BookTok's popular novel The Love Hypothesis, has selected its lead. It's Betty from Riverdale, played by Lili Reinhart. While she will take on the main role in the Amazon MGM Studios film, she is also an executive producer on the project, according to Deadline. Before this, she has also starred in and executive-produced projects like American Sweatshop (2025), Look Both Ways (2022), Chemical Hearts (2020), and more.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the casting on social media platform Twitter (now X), stating that the actress is perfect for the role of The Love Hypothesis character.

The actress also confirmed this in her Instagram post, where she’s seen with the bestselling novel written by Ali Hazelwood. Her fans were, of course, excited about this announcement and can't wait for it. Although they have to wait, since there's no release date for the movie.

Claire Scanlon, who made her directorial debut with Set It Up in 2018, will direct the movie. She has primarily worked on TV shows like The Office (2005-2013) and The Apprentice (2004-2017) and has received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning one. She will be directing from a screenplay written by Sarah Rothschild, who wrote The Sleepover (2020).

What is the story of The Love Hypothesis?

Ali Hazelwood's story is about a fake relationship that turns real. It's a tale among scientists where their chemistry feels like a love potion on screen.

The story centers on Olive Smith, whom Lili will portray in the film adaptation. Olive isn't interested in romantic relationships. Interestingly, she kisses the first man she sees to prove to her scientist friend that she is dating someone—just like that. However, this accidental spark will ignite flames that make Olive believe in love again.

We don't know who will play this lucky man in the film—who is Adam Carlsen in the book. Besides Adam and Olive, characters in "The Love Hypothesis" include Anh Pham, Malcolm, Dr. Tom Benton, Dr. Holden Rodriguez, and Jeremy.

As of now, the book has a 4.11-star rating on Goodreads based on 1.6 million reviews. It was the runner-up at the Goodreads Choice Awards, losing the top spot to Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation, which is also being made into a movie.

The book began as a Star Wars fan fiction

Here's a fun fact about the Ali Hazelwood book: it originally started as fan fiction featuring Kylo Ren and Rey, titled "Head Over Feet." Interestingly, Adam's character was named after the actor Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren. If you haven't seen the book cover, know that it reflects what the "Reylo" fandom would envision.
