Matt Damon is appearing as the lead actor in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, a film that is undoubtedly going to stir debates for years to come, as all the films from the master filmmaker have done. The actor is playing the Greek hero Odysseus in it alongside an ensemble cast of Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, and more.

It was a unique experience for Damon while filming the movie that was entirely shot on IMAX. He appeared in an interview on the New Heights podcast, where he shared this, saying:

"On this one, it was 100 percent on Imax. It was the first movie that was ever done all on Imax. Imax cameras are really loud. It sounds like a blender, like a Cuisinart in your face when the camera’s close to you. So there’s never been these dialogue [scenes in Imax]. We couldn’t have this conversation with a normal Imax camera because you wouldn’t be able to hear us."

The Odyssey is coming to theaters on July 17, 2026. It will be clashing with another one of Tom Holland's films coming in the same month, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth in the MCU-based Spider-Man series.

Christopher Nolan gave the IMAX CEO a challenge for The Odyssey

Before it was decided that the film was going to be shot on IMAX for its entirety, the director gave Rich Gelfond, IMAX CEO, a challenge. Gelfond explained in a statement about what Nolan said to him:

"‘I’m going to give you a challenge. If you can figure out how to solve these problems, I’m going to make Odyssey 100% film with IMAX cameras,’ and we’ve solved his problems. So, this will be the first film ever, at least filmed 100%, with IMAX cameras."

This will be the most expensive film for the director to date, as its estimated budget is said to be somewhere around $250 million. The Odyssey also features a wealth of regions, including Western Sahara, Italy, Morocco, and more, helping the epic Greek poem come to life on the big screen.

It will follow Odysseus's journey back home after the infamous Trojan War. He will encounter a great deal of mythical beings during his journey as he makes his way back to his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), who is busy fending off her suitors while he is away.

The Odyssey will be Nolan's first film to explore mythical beings, which is interesting to see, as he is known to provide depth in everything he presents on screen. The black hole Gargantua in his 2014 sci-fi film Interstellar, which has earned $773 million from its release and rereleases.

The Odyssey trailer is already live on YouTube, having garnered 37 million views already. You can see the world he has built, where a glimpse of a mythical Cyclops is there too.

Most of the cast and who they will be playing in the film have already been revealed, but the roles of a great deal of confirmed actors and actresses appearing in the film remain unknown. We will have to guess that until it hits the theaters.
