Are Quynh and Andy lovers in The Old Guard 2?
In The Old Guard 2, Andromache, or Andy (played by Charlize Theron), and Quỳnh (Veronica Ngô) reprise their roles from the first film. Quỳnh was introduced in the first film as someone who faced the trial of the witches. Andy had met several immortals, but only Quỳnh clicked with her after nearly 3,000 years of being single. So, although never explicitly stated, it can be said that the two are lovers in the film.
Quỳnh was relatively younger than Andromache of Scythia, but they started bonding after their first meeting in the desert. Quỳnh's brush with death is prevented by Andy, and they start being with each other for the next thousands of years.
They hold the promise to have each other's backs. The duo's romantic track is not overtly shown in the film, but it remains at a subtextual level as the characters mention each other in dialogue. Quỳnh died and was resurrected several times in a stretch of five hundred years. After Andy failed to find her and bring her back, she had to move on.
When Quỳnh returned, she was enraged to see Andy had moved on in life. This affected her, and she decided to go on the side of the antagonist. Despite her move, Quỳnh remains a good person at heart. Luckily, as the story progresses, the situation forces the two to come together again, and Quỳnh realizes that she was siding with the evil.
The Old Guard 2 ends on a cliffhanger note, so one might think a third installment might explore the dynamics between these two characters more deeply. However, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron said she waunsure about that.
“Never confident, no. One thing I’ve learned in this business is that there are no guarantees, and it’s really gracious of [Netflix] to not have pushed us into another direction,” she said.
Theron added,
“This was always where we wanted to land the film, and it’s also very reminiscent of the first one. So we treated this one exactly the same, but I’m being completely honest when I say that we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”
Even if a third installment does not happen, The Old Guard 2 manages to tie several loose ends as Andy and Quỳnh finally reconcile their differences and misunderstandings.
