The Old Guard 2 ended with a twist that practically begs for a sequel. But will the film actually make its way to a third installment?
While Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed a third installment, signs point to optimism. Charlize Theron is game to return, screenwriter Greg Rucka has always intended a trilogy, and the cast is all in. Director Victoria Mahoney won’t be back, but she’s voiced her support for the next chapter. The big deciding factor? Viewership. If fans show up in strong numbers, Netflix might just bring the Immortals back for one last battle. Here’s everything we know so far.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron talked about how confident she is about the potential of a sequel and said,
“Never confident, no. One thing I’ve learned in this business is that there are no guarantees, and it’s really gracious of [Netflix] to not have pushed us into another direction. This was always where we wanted to land the film, and it’s also very reminiscent of the first one. So we treated this one exactly the same, but I’m being completely honest when I say that we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”
As for Mahoney, the director has exited the franchise for now and has expressed her support for whoever picks up the mantle next, if a third installment gets greenlit. Talking to The Direct, she said,
“I’m not in the room. I’m not in that discussion of whether there will be another or not. Someone else will take that mantle in a wonderful, exciting way, and I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but I know it’ll be great, and it’ll be fun, and it will be with great regard and care for the audience, and I will be eagerly awaiting it.”
As for Rucka, he's all game for a third film as he has said so before, in 2022. The screenwriter talked about his ideas for a trilogy and told Looper,
“There is a complete three-part story that can be told. God willing, if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again.’ There’s more to tell, and there are questions that we want to answer.”
Does The Old Guard 2 set up a sequel for The Old Guard 3?
Yes, The Old Guard 2 leaves much space for a sequel. The film ends with Charlize Theron playing Andy’s team being taken by a powerful shadow group called Discord, led by Uma Thurman’s cool and ruthless character. As Andy and her partner Quỳnh decide to fight back against Discord, the film rolls the credits on the cliffhanger, leaving their fates unanswered.
What’s especially intriguing is that this entire Discord arc is new; it’s not pulled from the comics. Screenwriter Greg Rucka, who also wrote the graphic novels, specifically crafted this new narrative for the film trilogy, deepening the emotional threads and introducing a new character in the franchise.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed The Old Guard 3 yet, but everything’s lined up. The cast wants it. The fans want it. And after that ending? It would honestly be a crime not to finish the story.
The Old Guard 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
