Marvel star Hugh Jackman is once again coming to the big screen next year with his mystery comedy adaptation, The Sheep Detectives. According to reports, the Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures project was initially titled Three Bags Full (which is also the name of the OG novel), and now that the official trailer has arrived, excitement among fans is at its peak.
As seen in the 3-minute-long clip, Jackman portrays a middle-aged shepherd named George Hardy who lives on a desolate farm all by himself and dedicates his days to taking care of his flock. Hardy likes to spend his time:
"Taking care of the kindest creatures on Earth."
The Sheep Detectives trailer further reveals that Hardy tries to interact with his sheep, reading bedtime stories to them, and pretends that they understand what he says. However, the innocent animals do get along with his words and communicate amongst themselves. But things go south when George gets murdered, leaving behind a string of questions for his beloved animals to solve.
Hugh Jackman plays a lone shepherd in The Sheep Detectives: Here's all about the latest murder mystery comedy
Hugh Jackman's character in The Sheep Detectives is a jolly man who spends his time taking care of animals on a farm somewhere miles away from the conundrums of city life. He does it by choice and enjoys being with his sheep while feeding and grooming them every single day and reading murder mystery stories to his flock before going to sleep.
George likes to pretend that the sheep can perceive his words, and they also sit quietly to listen to the tales of twists. Funny thing, the flock can actually understand the stories and even discuss the plot after George goes away to sleep. However, the lives of these voiceless (seemingly) animals are turned upside down when their master himself becomes the victim of a murder plot.
The sheep find George lying on the grass one day, "not moving," and then and there they conclude that it is a murder. The leaders of the flock think that the local police officers "are hopeless" when it comes to solving a crime, so they need to do it themselves.
So, the sheep in The Sheep Detectives, despite all the fear and nervousness, leave their home behind for the first time to work on a full-fledged murder investigation. But as it appears, there is more to George's death once they learn that he has left behind a will worth "thirty million dollars".
The Speep Detectives is the directorial debut of American animator and filmmaker Kyle Balda, who is leading an ensemble cast including Nicholas Braun, Patrick Stewart, Emma Thompson, and Regina Hall. The Hugh Jackman comedy is gearing up for a theatrical premiere in the United States and the United Kingdom on May 8, 2026.
