The Smashing Machine is the first solo directorial feature film of Benny Safdie, after the duo, along with Josh Safdie, decided to go their separate ways.
The biographical sports drama tells the story of former Mixed Martial Arts fighter Mark Kerr. The film won the Silver Lion during its premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. It was released theatrically by A24 on October 3, 2025. Here's the official logline as per Letterboxd:

In an interview with The Atlantic, Safdie spoke about telling the story of Kerr. He said,
“If you take somebody in a position like that, that’s really unrelatable, that’s the best in the world, but then they start faltering? [It] allows you to learn something about yourself and the rest of the world.”
He called Rocky III an inspiration for the story.
“In Rocky III, he starts as the best. Then what happens?”
