It's been almost a decade since we last saw SpongeBob on the big screen, but that is about to change with The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants, which is slated for a December theatrical release.
Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Animation released a brand new teaser trailer for the upcoming adventure of the Bikini Bottom gang. Along with new adventures, it is also gearing up for a whole new set of problems and the return of a "swashbuckling" villain voiced by none other than Mark Hamill.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants releases a brand new teaser trailer
The last theatrical release for SpongeBob SquarePants dates back to Sponge Out of Water in February 2015, but he's coming back for a brand-new adventure with his comic absurdity. The logline for the upcoming movie reads:
"SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends set sail in their biggest, all-new, can’t miss cinematic event ever…The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. Desperate to be a big guy, SpongeBob sets out to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs by following The Flying Dutchman – a mysterious swashbuckling ghost pirate – on a seafaring comedy-adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the deep sea, where no Sponge has gone before."
Keeping up with the film aesthetic for SpongeBob, The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants is 3D-animated, unlike the 2D-animated Nickelodeon cartoon, and is headed by animator and director Derek Drymon.
The teaser reveals that the Bikini Bottom gang is about to go to depths that they've never gone before, and it's not for the faint of heart, as Krusty notes:
"The Dutchman's taken SpongeBob to the deepest, most dangerous part of the sea, THE UNDERWORLD!"
and Squidward jokes:
"Under where? Underwear."
The Dutchman is voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray in the cartoon, but The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants is bringing the big guns with Mark Hamill voicing the character. The rest of the gang remains the same, as Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence come together with George Lopez, Isis “Ice Spice” Gaston, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, and Regina Hall to bring the film to life.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants is Derek Drymon's directorial debut, but the story has been penned down by Marc Ceccarelli & Kaz, and Pam Brady, and the screenplay is by Pam Brady and Matt Lieberman. Additionally, Lisa Stewart, Aaron Dem, and Pam Brady are listed with production credits, along with Marc Ceccarelli, Pete Chiappetta, Vincent Waller, Andrew Lary, and Anthony Tittanegro as executive producers on the project.
This SpongeBob movie dives deeper into the depths of the ocean, and along with exploring the mysterious realms of the sea, we have a host of celebrity cameos and laugh-out-loud absurd and slapstick comedy in store for us with the latest addition to the franchise.
So, gear up for the ride of your life this Christmas, as The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants comes to your nearest theaters on December 19, 2025.
