A story of exploitation and migrant abuse-Bogdan's crime in The Thursday Murder Club, explored
In The Thursday Murder Club, a man named Tony Curran (Geoff Bell) is murdered, and that is when the investigation takes place.
The squad, comprising Elizabeth Best (Helen Mirren), Ron Ritchie (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim Arif (Ben Kingsley), and Joyce Meadowcroft (Celia Imrie), lives in a retirement home named Cooper's Chase.
Tony Curran and another man named Ian Ventham (David Tennant) were the former joint owners of Cooper's Chase. Joining them is a guy with a criminal past, Bobby Tanner (Richard E. Grant), who is the unofficial co-proprietor. By the side of the retirement home, there is a graveyard and a church, both also owned by the Cooper's Chase duo.
When Tony Curran dies, all suspicion falls on Ian Ventham, who, anyway, seemed a little shady. But soon, Ian is also mysteriously killed. Ian had big ambitions of dismantling Cooper's Chase and replacing it with new, grand, fancy architecture. But Tony didn't want the same, since his Aunt Maud lived in the old home.
In the midst of this, Ron's son Jason also becomes a suspect, as a photo of him, Tanner, and Tony is found. So, it was naturally assumed that Jason and Tanner wanted Ian and Tony out of their way to enable Tanner to obtain complete rights to the property.
So how does Bogdan come into the picture in The Thursday Murder Club? Well, Bogdan works on the maintenance of the cemetery. Ian asked Bogdan to dig up the ground so that the process of displacing Cooper's Chase can be completed as soon as possible. When Elizabeth comes to her home, she unexpectedly sees Bogdan playing a game of chess with her husband, Stephen (Jonathan Pryce), who is suffering from amnesia.
When she meets Bogdan to extract information, she fakes her name as Marina. So now that Bogdan is at her place, Elizabeth's real identity is exposed. Bogdan takes her to the cemetery to show her a skeleton placed over a coffin, and it makes the case even twistier in The Thursday Murder Club.
Elizabeth, along with PC Donna De Freitas (Naomi Ackie), finds out that Tanner has an alibi. It is revealed that Tanner was involved in the birthday party preparations of Prince Khalid Al-Berro. So, technically, he was not physically present around them. But after the murders of Ian and Tony, it still somehow benefits Tanner as he is the only owner now. All he wants is to sell the property as soon as possible.
During the meeting, important information gets leaked to Elizabeth as she finds out that Tanner and Tony used to exploit Polish workers from Amsterdam. They would not allow the workers to access their own passports, and they would make them slog at a very low wage. Tanner revealed to Elizabeth that Tony took the level of exploitation a step further, as he would not even allow the workers to meet their close ones. That is when it clicked to Elizabeth that Bogdan is also Polish.
It is then revealed that Bogdan, who again visited Stephen for a game of chess, has confessed to his crime. Bogdan narrates a tragic story rooted in abuse and human rights violations. He reveals that Tony was not letting him go to Poland to visit his sick mother and even seized his passport.
Soon, things got heated up in the altercation, and Tony, fortuitously, faced his death in The Thursday Murder Club. As per Bogdan, he had no motive to harm Tony. All he wanted was to visit his mother. But since Tony was preventing him from doing that, this murder took place in the heat of the moment.
Bogdan's confession gets documented, as Stephen always records his chess games. Soon, Bogdan gets arrested.
In The Thursday Murder Club, Bogdan kills Tony. But interestingly, those bones that Bogdan shows to Elizabeth have led the gang to discover the truth about Ian's murder. It is linked to another crime case, which is connected to some events that took place in the 1970s. To uncover that, you need to watch the movie!
