“The idea was to create a retirement village that we've never seen before on film. A retirement village that was the exact opposite of an audience's preconceived perceptions - a place where the viewers would want to spend their twilight years.”

He further spoke about Coopers Chase.

"There was a tremendous amount of wish fulfillment involved in the design of Coopers Chase. The place is warm, inviting, and luxurious. Each of the characters' flats are a reflection of their unique and distinctive personalities. This somewhat magical backdrop creates a strong contrast to the violent murders that occur in the film."

Columbus has stated that they are sticking to the plot of the first novel that the film has been adapted from. He also admitted that some changes have been made.
