“The way I almost moved”: Fans excited as Rihanna is set to release new single ‘Friend Of Mine’ from the ‘Smurfs Movie’

Rihanna is set to release new music, and Netizens are excited, to say the least. The nine-time Grammy Award winner has lent her vocals for Friend of Mine, a soundtrack from the Smurfs movie set to be released on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Rihanna will also voice Smurfette, a character from the animated movie, who Katy Perry and Demi Lovato previously played. The soon-to-be-released single is Rihanna's first music project since her 2022 critically acclaimed ballad Lift Me Up from Marvel's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Riri took to her social media pages to share a new snippet of the Smurfs movie and the release date for Friend of Mine. The clip begins with Rihanna dressed in a blue and white track jacket in what appears to be a studio before transitioning to scenes from the animated movie.

The trailer also introduces Rihanna’s character Smurfette as she embarks on a mission to rescue Papa Smurf. Renowned pop culture and entertainment page on X, @Pop Crave, shared a tweet that read:

The upcoming animated musical Smurfs stars Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, and JP Karliak, amongst others. The cartoon is a spin-off from the Smurfs franchise that began in the 60s.

The plot of the reboot would center around protagonist Smurfette as she joins forces with her fellow Smurfs to rescue Papa Smurf from the captivity of wicked wizards Gargamel and Razamel.

Following a production timeline that began in February 2022, Smurfs was originally scheduled to premiere on December 20, 2024, but was shifted to February 14, 2025, before Paramount finally settled for July 18, 2025.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in February 2025, Rihanna revealed she was closer than ever to completing her highly anticipated ninth album. She added,

“I just cracked the code on what I want to do for my next body of work. I am actually feeling really good about this.”
