The fifth movie in Disney's villainous families' franchise, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, will follow in the footsteps of last year's Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024), which stars Brandy Rayana Norwood as Cinderella, Paolo Montalban as King Charming, Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts, and Melanie Paxson as the Fairy Godmother.
We may see them together in the fifth film again if what Entertainment Weekly has learned is true. Other than them, Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Joshua Colley, and more are in the film too. While it was met with mixed reviews, it garnered 6.7 million views on the streaming service Disney+ within the first three days of release.
The franchise is an amalgamation of several Disney films, with Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon first putting forth the idea of bringing children of iconic Disney villains in a story. The first three films arrived between 2015 and 2019, while the fourth in the line was released five years later, in 2024; it was a spin-off.
From where will the story of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland resume?
Descendants: Wicked Wonderland isn't a part of the original trilogy and will continue the story of the 2024 film in the series. The film followed the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, who had to kill Cinderella, though she didn't really want to.
However, to make things right, she then tries to make things right by going into the past, but she has to deal with Cinderella's daughter, Chloe. The fight ensues between them, and they are inadvertently sent to the past when Auradon Prep, an academy Red was supposed to join, was still the infamous Merlin Academy.
The plan here is to change the events in the past so that the present remains safe from evil. That said, the girls find out that there was a prank that turned Red's mother evil, which is why the Queen of Hearts is glad when Cinderella dies.
But then they are able to find out what went wrong, and after a series of confrontations with some villains in this past timeline, they can save that prank from happening. Red only takes a sigh of relief when both the girls return to the present day and learns that the Queen of Hearts is actually the Queen of Hearts. Their plan worked.
What to expect from Descendants: Wicked Wonderland now?
While we don't really have the plot for the film, The Rise of Red does give us a cliffhanger at the end. Uma (China Anne McClain), who is the headmistress of Auradon Prep, gives us a message that messing with time certainly has some consequences. Not everyone can pull off a time heist like the Avengers, you know?
However, Suzanne Todd, executive producer of The Rise of Red, said about Descendants: Wicked Wonderland in one interview that,
"I can neither confirm nor deny the future good or evil-ness of anybody other than saying that there will be future good and evil turns for sure."
That said, we can expect some good characters to turn evil and vice versa. For that, it is likely that the girls may travel again to make things right. If they try to do that, the Queen of Hearts will again become evil, but maybe this time they'll be able to save Cinderella.
