Denzel Washington played a man of faith back in The Hughes Brothers' 2010 film, The Book of Eli. It sure had a mild reception from critics and the fans alike, but it comes with twists and turns and an ironic ending most won't expect by the end of the film.
Other than Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Beals, and more are in this post-apocalyptic action film, where resources have become scarce after a nuclear holocaust. Oldman again played a villain audiences will like, though he isn't as intimidating as his iconic Norman Stansfield from Léon: The Professional.
It also features Alcatraz Island, which actually closed in 1963, and is still thriving, unlike the world we see throughout most of the film. That is where Washington, who plays the titular Eli, finally reveals the wisdom of the book he carried in his journey, the Bible, and it's the last Bible on earth. Well, at least by the film's end.

Nobody realized the secret about Denzel Washington's Eli until the book was opened

What's common among Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Denzel Washington's Eli? One is that they are a couple of deadly fighters. And second, they cannot see. But no one can tell this until the very end of the film.
The fact that almost everyone is sporting black glasses in The Book of Eli also makes it one of the coolest films, speaking fashion-wise. Take Mila Kunis, who plays Solara in the film, for example. She is a proper model walking the road alongside Eli in this post-apocalyptic world.
She joins him in his journey after Eli's confrontation with Oldman's Carnegie and his crew of ragtag, who are after the Bible.
Eli won't let anyone touch his Bible, which happens when he and Solara are resting, and she tries to take a look at it while he is sleeping. However, he isn't really sleeping and catches her off guard, safeguarding the book after that.
Carnegie and his crew eventually find them, and Eli has to give up the book. He is shot, and Solara is taken away, but she manages to escape and find Eli, and they continue their journey to the west.
When it's finally time for Carnegie to open the book, which he feels will give him power over people, he is shocked. The book is in Braille. Eli was blind all this time. That is why he was a man of faith and continued his journey towards the West as a voice in his head told him to, which he explained to Solara while they were resting.
It was an ironic ending

This world has seen thirty nuclear winters already when the story finally begins. This is also the reason behind everyone wearing different types of black glasses to safeguard themselves from the glaring sun. Some are even blind, like Denzel Washington's Eli in the film. One of them is Carnegie's mistress and Solara's mom, Claudia (Beals).
When Carnegie asks her to read what's written in Braille to him, she chooses not to by claiming that it has been a long time since she has done that, and she has forgotten it. In the ironic ending, people who could see couldn't see the wisdom of the Bible. And the ones who couldn't see saw everything, thanks to Louis Braille.
We also learn that Eli has learned the Bible by heart and recites it at the end, so more copies of it can be made.
