Owen Cooper has officially made Emmy history, becoming the youngest male winner ever in any category. Cooper was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the Netflix series Adolescence, where he played the role of 13-year-old boy Jamie Miller. The series was released earlier this year on the platform and consisted of four episodes.
In his acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards, he said:
"Standing up here is just wow. It's just so surreal. When I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn't expect to even be in the United States, never mind here. But I think tonight proves if you listen, and you focus, and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life."
Reflecting on his journey, he added:
"I was nothing about three years ago. I'm here now, so I think if you're listening and you're focusing, you just step out of your comfort zone a little bit. Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible."
Owen Cooper also thanked his parents for the support and the team of Adolescence, along with Netflix. Ending the speech, he said:
"It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people beyond the camera."
