There has been a lot of discussion since 12-year-old North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian, shared her new look that included fake face tattoos, a nose piercing, and grillz. In the clip on the TikTok account that North shares with her mother, she shows her with friends enjoying themselves in playful, staged "body modifications." Many viewers have expressed concern. Kim addressed the concerns and referred to how people reacted to "such a non-issue."

The look itself was clearly qualified by North in the TikTok post with "fake piercings and fake tatts 4 life." So we are seeing a bit of costume style instead of any actual tattoo or modification.

What happened that got everyone talking?

Videos of Kim Kardashian's daughter, North West, surfaced showing North's hair in a blue braid, a faux nose ring (septum), grillz over her teeth, and small face tattoos, including a star under one eye. The short TikTok videos were posted on a joint account with Kim Kardashian. Notably, the caption to the videos specified that the piercings and tattoos were fake.

Despite the aforementioned label, the public became involved; viewers of the videos publicly questioned the appropriateness of a young girl wearing such makeup, or that it was too far. Conversely, there were supporters of North, saying she is just playing, expressing style, and having fun with her friends.

Kim Kardashian's response occurred shortly thereafter. On the TikTok clip’s comments section, the joint account replied:

"This is such a non-issue 😭."

The incident adds to a previous debate. Earlier this year, people expressed concern when North was seen with a dermal piercing on her middle finger during a trip to Rome with her mother. That was another moment when many asked questions about age, style, and parenting.

Kim Kardashian’s comments and context

Kim Kardashian spoke about this and other style moments in a recent podcast appearance. She said that North is "really confident." She quoted,

"Mom, I saw this and I don’t really care that they don’t like… my blue hair or this or that."

Kim also acknowledged that being a parent of a preteen can be hard. She said she has made mistakes and asked for "a little bit of grace." She said,

"I'm like, okay, we're never wearing that again. Unfortunately, we made that mistake in front of the whole world. As a mom, you're kind of like learning at the same time."

Regarding North's recent look, Kim insisted that it is just creative expression, harmless fun, and that she does not intend to limit North's self‐expression in fashion and beauty. She said that North is taking classes in special effects makeup, which she has been "perfecting."

Kim also referenced the earlier finger piercing controversy. While she didn’t actually defend the choice fully, she acknowledged that she stood behind the concept that her kid is a good kid. For now, Kim Kardashian has made her stance clear by calling the backlash unnecessary. North's TikTok is still live, and neither the mother nor the daughter seems to care about the reactions.
