The story of the film is written by Eric Pearson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joanna Calo. Produced by Kevin Feige, it focuses on a group of antiheroes who are fighting their own demons. They are forced to come together to stop a powerful villain. Here's a list of its cast members:
- Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier
- Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka U.S. Agent
- Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster
- Lewis Pullman as Robert "Bob" Reynolds / Sentry / Void
- Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
- Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr aka Ghost
- David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian
- Chris Bauer as Holt
- Wendell Pierce as Gary
The protagonists of Thunderbolts* are shown struggling with their mental health issues, a first for the MCU. In an interview with The Wrap, the film’s director Jake Schreier spoke about getting Beef (which he executive-produced) creator Lee Sung Jin to write the drafts for exploring dark themes. He said,
“It was about bringing a lot of that tone that we explored in ‘Beef’ and feeling like that could work on an even larger scale. He really believed in this idea that you could explore darker, internal issues and that these ideas are not niche anymore, that those are really universal things that everyone experienced.”
He added,
“We just kept pushing that character development, to make those internal ideas work as well as the external ones.”
The film met with positive reviews but failed to garner the audience's attention, grossing only $382.4 million. The title of the film was also changed to The New Avengers towards the end. Meanwhile, the MCU continues to expand and has several films in the lineup, including Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will release on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.
